USA - WYOMING: BETTER THAN YOUR DREAMS![]() The setting was a rugged Wyoming mountain lake area in the late 1800s and the question posed by Owen Wister’s character, the Virginian, couldn’t be confined to an answer of yes or no. As the Virginian pondered a resolve he said: “No; none but the one who understands things they can’t put words to.” If you’ve felt it, you know what he meant. If you have not maybe the time has come to give yourself the chance to be taken to a place beyond words. It goes by the name of Wyoming. Wister knew of what he wrote. He spent many summers in the “Cowboy State” and later created the first modern western, The Virginian, a novel published a century ago. The Wyoming Wister presented to the world and the Rocky Mountain havens of today have some striking similarities. Over many square miles, Wyoming is still very much the same as it was when the Virginian and his love Molly rode horseback into the mountains on honeymoon, and for the rest of their lives together remembered the trip with a simple sentence spoken softly to one another: “Better than our dreams.” Buffalo Bill Cody had a dream. He knew a road to Yellowstone National Park from his namesake town of Cody would bring visitors from all over the world. So Buffalo Bill and friends built a road. And what a stretch of highway it has become! The hour-long drive of today took two days back in the stagecoach era. Now, the new road is complete with wider shoulders and many pullouts for family stops. Cody’s Buffalo Bill Historical Center is sometimes referred to as “The Smithsonian of The West” and for good reason. The complex includes five distinct museums all under one very large roof. There is one of the world’s best collections of art and bronze works showcasing the American West. The Plains Indian Museum has recently adopted state-of-the-art technology to exhibit its collections in interactive fashion. The Cody Firearms Museum has no rival in terms of the number and variety of weaponry. A wing is dedicated to Buffalo Bill colorfully telling his story. And the Draper Museum of Natural History is touted, quite rightly, as the 21st Century’s first and best depiction of its kind. Visitors spiral up and down detailed exhibits that enthrall them with the sights and sounds they will find out-of-doors in the greater Yellowstone ecosystem. Cody is famous for its nightly rodeos in the summer and recent additions to the touring public are extremely helpful. Historic trolley tours provide in-depth information. A large touring bus also has established routes making the trip from your hotel to all area attractions easier. There are actually two routes to Yellowstone from Cody. The aforementioned trek to the East Entrance and a breathtakingly beautiful ride to the North East Gate via Chief Joseph Scenic Highway. Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks are the pride and joy of the world and Wyoming is a watchful steward. In Yellowstone, you can find geysers, bubbling hot spots galore, and a wildlife array visible in its natural environment like nowhere else. And the Teton Mountain Range is as stunning a sight as you’ll ever take in morning, noon or night. Your Wyoming visit will be greatly enhanced by a stop along the lesser-known trails. Those motoring via Denver, Colorado, will want to divert at Laramie to visit Wyoming Territorial Park right alongside Interstate 80. It is the only former prison that actually housed famed outlaw Butch Cassidy. Buildings have been renovated with distinction and a frontier town offers up a soothing sarsaparilla as well as western crafts and living history demonstrations. Laramie, located in Albany County, is also home to the University of Wyoming. There is a vast collection of art and western memorabilia at the American Heritage Center on campus. The Geology Museum provides visitors with complete knowledge of Wyoming’s rich dinosaur past. If you choose Interstate 80 for your travels in Wyoming be sure to divert at Laramie for a meeting with the Snowy Range Road. West of Laramie and just after the quaint town of Centennial you’ll traverse some of the most impressive mountain landscapes you can imagine right along the main road. The drive is easy and the road well kept. Whatever your Wyoming destination you can be assured of high times on the high plains of the American West. A blue-denim hospitality and a tip of the ten-gallon anxiously seeks your presence where the deer and antelope still play. Photo: courtesy Wyoming Travel & Tourism
