USA - WISCONSIN : EXPLORE TWO GREAT LAKES

new jersey, usa

Dotted along 1,100 magnificent miles of scenic coastline like pearls on a necklace, Wisconsin's harbor towns have been welcoming visitors to their shores for more than 150 years.

From sophisticated cities to quaint fishing villages, Wisconsin's harbor towns feature a unique smorgasbord of outdoor recreation, museums, shopping, arts, dining and relaxing scenery.

Milwaukee's lakefront and downtown provide an array of options for fun-filled weekends, from live theatre and ballet to opera and symphonic performances, museums and art galleries.

Milwaukee's lakefront is also known for the variety of ethnic festivals that take place through out the summer, including Summerfest, Festa Italiana and African World Festival.

If your day trip turns into an overnight stay, enjoy Old World hospitality and luxurious accommodations at The Pfister Hotel, named one of the "World's Best Places to Stay" by Conde Nast Traveler, or if you're looking for something a little funkier, Hotel Metro's style and elegance create a mood full of charm and character in the heart of the city's downtown.

Kenosha continues to be one of Wisconsin's lakefront gems. The picturesque HarborPark neighborhood has a promenade winding along the lakeshore through parks, fountains, and sculptures.

With the largest marina on Lake Michigan, and vibrant festival scene and great attractions, Racine gives visitors countless reasons to drop anchor (or park the car) and come ashore. The Racine Art Museum is home to one of the most significant collections of contemporary arts in North America.

Picturesque Port Washington boasts the first man-made harbor in North America. Part of the Wisconsin Maritime Heritage Trail, the city's harborwalk has exhibits commemorating shipwrecks off the Port Washington coast.

Located halfway between Milwaukee and Green Bay, Sheboygan has a splendid marina. Sheboygan County is ranked as one of the best golf destinations.

Dubbed Wisconsin's "Maritime Capital", Manitowoc celebrates its illustrious past and present as a shipbuilding hub with displays of nautical treasures ranging from wooden sailing ships to the USS COBIA, a World War II submarine, at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum.

Browse the extensive Norman Rockwell collection at The Old School, a 1905 schoolhouse turned shops complex.

Renowned as a vibrant fishing and shipping hub, Two Rivers, with seven-plus miles of sandy beaches, is a great destination for charter fishing. Beyond the surf, numerous ship wrecks entice scuba divers. The Great Coast Guard Museum has many wonderful marine artifacts on display.

East of Green Bay, Kewaunee is renowned as a great fishing community with boating, canoeing and mountain-biking opportunities.

Algoma is rich in history and cultural heritage. Hiking, biking, snowmobiling and horseback riding are easily enjoyed along the Ahnapee State Trail.

The hub of Wisconsin's premiere vacation destination, Door County, Sturgeon Bay is home to a charming downtown where visitors will find quaint eateries and specialty shops with antiques, fine art and holiday selections.

Door County is known as the Cape Cod of the Midwest. With five state parks and 10 lighthouses framed by 250 miles of picturesque shoreline, this 75-mile long peninsula combines pristine scenery and outdoor recreational activities with acclaimed performing arts, renowned galleries and shops, and pampering accommodations.

Home of the Packers, Green Bay offers many great recreational activities including golfing, boating, hiking and fishing. Green Bay has an excellent zoo, old-fashioned amusement park and wildlife sanctuary.

The harbor town is home to many great cultural attractions including more than 40 acres of historic buildings at Heritage Hill State Historical Park, the chance to ride the rails at the National Railroad Museum, opportunities to explore Native American culture at the Oneida National Museum or tour the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame at the renovated Lambeau Field.

Oconto is a classic Wisconsin harbor town and Marinette is a wonderful destination for boaters.

Situated on the south shore of Lake Superior, Ashland's rich history is depicted throughout the town but especially in the Historic Main Street.

No more than 15 minutes from Ashland's city limits, the Chequamegon National Forest provides 850,000 acres of scenic landscapes, outdoor recreation and is home to several hundred wildlife species.

Located just 30 minutes north of Ashland, the Apostle Islands, a 22 island archipelago, provides dramatic scenery and great angling, sea kayaking and boating opportunities with nearby historic towns Washburn and Bayfield.

Located on the far western tip of the Great Lake Superior, lies the city of Superior. On one of the most pristine lakes in the world, many communities border this magnificent body of water, offering unique attractions, events and recreational opportunities. Within the midst of the harbor area is Barker's Island, a waterfront playground.
