USA - VERMONT : SEASONAL VERMONT

Without doubt, the biggest Vermont event of all is Fall and the world-famous explosion of foliage color it brings each year.

Framed beautifully between sparkling Lake Champlain to the west and the majestic Green Mountains to the east, Burlington and the Lake region are among the most beautiful of all venues for Vermont’s legendary foliage displays.

But don't sell Vermont's summer and winter short.

Whether it is on a motorcycle or bicycle or in a car, Vermont is a cruiser’s paradise. Vermont has three major north/south routes that take you from the Massachusetts border to Canada (Routes 5, 7 and 100) and three major east/west routes that take you across the entire state (Routes 2, 4 and 9).

Each road offers its own unique treasures and all of the roads showcase the range of Vermont from its smallest towns to its Vermont-sized cities.

Route 2, for example, takes you from the beautiful Lake Champlain Islands east through Montpelier, the smallest state capital in the country and further east toward St. Johnsbury and the gateway to the rural grandeur of the famous Northeast Kingdom. At only 157 miles from top to bottom, you can see most of Vermont in a week’s time.

With 9,000 miles of mostly rural roads and hundreds of miles of off-road trails, Vermont is also rapidly gaining attention as a mountain biking destination.

Vermont is the best state in New England for viewing antique and classic automobiles. The annual Hildene Antique and Classic Car Show takes place on the grounds of Hildene, the Manchester home of Robert Todd Lincoln, son of President Abraham Lincoln and one of Vermont’s grandest estates.

Stowe hosts two events each year, the Antique and Classic Car Show in August and the British Invasion – the largest British motorcar show on the East Coast – in September. Vermont is also home to the Precision Valley Corvette Museum in Springfield.

When people think of Vermont, they usually think of white clapboard villages. Vermont is also home to some spectacular mansions like Hildene (Manchester), Wilson Castle (Rutland), Shelburne Farms (Shelburne) and the Park McCullough House (North Bennington). These estates are reminiscent of a very different era, but are an indelible part of our cultural heritage.

But make no mistake — Vermont is water country. Vermont is home to Lake Champlain, the sixth largest freshwater body in the United States. Vermont has 808 lakes and ponds, 284 of which are larger than 20 acres. Vermont is also home to over 7,000 miles of streams. Whether you’re into canoeing, kayaking, sailing, fishing, tubing or swimming, you can find the right venue in Vermont’s waterways.

Well-known as a downhill skiing and snowboarding mecca, Vermont is where the world celebrates winter. Skiers and snowboarders can choose from more than 5,700 acres of terrain at 17 different alpine resorts.

Dog sledding is a great way to get outside and explore the backcountry of Vermont. The day starts with an introduction to the basics of mushing, including dog commands and sled maneuvers.

Vermont has 37 cross-country ski touring centers and the longest cross-country ski trail in America, the 300-mile Catamount Trail. For more than 30 years, Vermont has been opening the doors to winter's wonders with a remarkable 5,000 mile snowmobile trail system.

Snowshoeing has been a way of life in the Green Mountains for well over a century and visitors can learn the exhilarating sport of climbing a frozen waterfall with equipment and instruction provided when you take a beginner lesson.

Rent an ice shanty, get your fishing license, and seek out the many species of fish available in the ice-covered lakes. Guides are available to lead you to the best fishing holes.

If you haven’t strapped on your skates in awhile, take a Nordic skating tour that includes equipment, transportation, and lessons. Sample some of these activities at the Vermont Ice Marathon, Lake Morey Winterfest, or Vermont Skate-athon, all taking place in January at Lake Morey in Fairlee, home to the longest ice skating trail in the United States.

Vermont’s First Night is an affordable, substance-free New Year’s Eve festival welcoming all ages. With over 1,000 artists and 30 sites, the streets come alive with artistry. There is something for everyone at First Night with music, theater, magic, comedy, dance, and family activities.

There are First Night events held in Burlington, Montpelier, and Rutland. Mardi Gras parties quickly follow in February and March with two of the largest celebrations in Burlington and Rutland.

In the early months of a new year, Ludlow has a one-day carnival, Stowe hosts a ten-day winter carnival, Brattleboro stages a week-long carnival, there is the Middlebury College Winter Carnival, the oldest and largest student-run carnival in the country and the Burlington Winter Festival.
