USA - SOUTH CAROLINA - CHARLESTON : A LIVING MUSEUM

new jersey, usa

With a rich 300 year history, Charleston today is America's most beautifully preserved architectural and historical treasure, aptly called a "living museum".

History is literally found around every corner of this intriguing city but in addition, Charleston offers culture, splendid shopping, unique tours and delicious dining and super hotels.

It has notched up numerous and varied historic "firsts". The first decisive American victory during the Revolution occurred at the Battle of Fort Sullivan. The first regularly scheduled passenger train service in America was established here in 1830. The initial shots of the Civil War were fired on Union troops stationed at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. And the first golf course (Harleston Green) and golf club (The South Carolina Golf Club) in America were established in 1786.

Begin your visit with a stop at the Charleston Visitor Center located at 375 Meeting Street. Many tour and attraction tickets can be purchased here, with many tours departing from the Center itself. The multi-sensory presentation "Forever Charleston" is shown throughout the day and provides visitors with a framework for understanding the city they are about to discover.

The DASH Trolley departs regularly from the Center and provides a very affordable means of transportation to the attractions located in the Charleston's Historic District.

Charleston lends itself to walking, and many visitors find this to be a convenient way to see everything the city has to offer. Beautiful homes, churches and public buildings line the city's tree-lined streets.

Magnificent formal gardens grace much of the Historic District, adding to the beauty of the colonial, antebellum, and Victorian architecture.

Some of the more popular attractions are White Point Gardens, (commonly called "The Battery") and the Waterfront Park. Other "must see" attractions include the new South Carolina Aquarium, the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon, the Gibbes Museum, the Charleston Museum and its Museum Houses, the Aiken-Rhett House, the Edmondston-Alston House and the Nathaniel Russell House.

Numerous events highlight the arts and Charleston's diverse cultural heritage. Some of the most widely-known include the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, the Annual Festival of Houses and Gardens, Spoleto Festival USA, the Fall Candlelight Tour of Homes, the MOJA Festival and Christmas in Charleston.

Be sure to visit the quaint antique shops along King Street, and browse for hand-made sweetgrass baskets and other crafts in Charleston's Historic District and famous Old City Market. From its recognizable shops such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Gucci to its specialty stores like Ben Silver and Croghanís Jewel Box, Charleston is a shopper's delight. The entire city is chock full of interesting and unusual specialty shops.

Charleston offers a variety of accommodation options. Almost all of the national hotel and motel chains have properties here.

Nearby North Charleston is the perfect place as a "home base" for a South Carolina Lowcountry visit ... particularly as North Charleston offers no parking meters, an array of hotels, a wide selection of restaurants, entertainment complexes, shopping malls and specialty shops, and is central to accessing other area attractions.

Historical plantations, gardens, and parks are nearby, as well as some of the country's finest cultural events. There is access to museums, theatre and art galleries.

The North Charleston Performing Arts Center offers smaller venue concerts, features Broadway plays and other creative entertainment. The North Charleston Coliseum hosts a variety of events, including concerts, circuses, arts & crafts exhibits, and ice shows.
