USA - RHODE ISLAND : A TINY GEM

Rhode Island is the perfect getaway for folks who want all the variety of a New England experience without hours of travel and hassle. Attractions, accommodations, first-class restaurants and shopping are packed into Rhode Island, the smallest state in the union.

But don’t be fooled. Rhode Island’s small size doesn’t mean you’ll be bored. From sailing and vineyard hopping in Newport County to apple-picking and surfing in South County, there are wildly different areas of Rhode Island waiting for you.

Washington County, or South County to the locals, is the quintessential beach locale with more than 100 miles of coastline and fifteen public beaches to frolic, play, swim and surf in.

Providence, Rhode Island’s capital city, boasts scores of world-renowned restaurants, boutique shopping and an arts scene that would make any metropolitan area twice as large proud.

Historic Bristol hosts its 221st Fourth of July parade this year throughout the downtown area. As the oldest Fourth of July parade in the country, it attracts thousands of people and parties galore.

Newport County, long a tourist hub of the state, includes the glittering City-by-the-Sea, Newport, and picturesque towns Middletown, Portsmouth, Jamestown, Tiverton and Little Compton.

Newport, with its fabulous Gilded-Age mansions, cobblestone streets, worldclass restaurants, and one-of-a-kind shops, is a first-class resort-by-the-sea.

Newport is both an exciting resort community and a quaint New England town, a bustling place where sailboat masts and church steeples form the skyline.

Newport is perhaps best known for its Gilded-Age posh mansions. Six of the mansions are currently owned by the Preservation Society of Newport County and available for tours.

Touro Synagogue, the oldest synagogue in the country, and the International Tennis Hall of Fame, home of oldest grass courts in the United States, are also located in this world-famous seaport.

The famous Ocean Drive and Cliff Walk provide spectacular views of the ocean, beaches, and the harbor, where luxury yachts and fishing boats are moored side-by-side.

Shops and galleries along fashionable Bellevue Avenue and Brick Marketplace are filled with everything from hand-crafted wooden toys to imported crystal. Worldclass restaurants, many with waterfront views, feature a plethora of dining cuisine.

Of course, other scenic areas abound in Newport County. The Norman Bird Sanctuary, Prescott Farm and Purgatory Chasm, all in Middletown, and Glen Farm, in Portsmouth, provide idyllic displays of beauty.

The Blackstone Valley, known as "the birthplace of American industry," is an area rich in history and architectural beauty. In Pawtucket, Samuel Slater established the nation's first cotton mill in 1793 and forever changed the nature of textile technology. The Slater Mill Historic site stands today as a handsomely restored museum.

Industry, however, has not depleted the region of its rolling countryside, charming small towns and its strong New England flavor. The Blackstone Valley provides the Ocean State with some of its best fall foliage displays, as well as autumn events.

History abounds in Blackstone Valley with the historic Smith-Appleby House (circa 1696) located in Smithfield. Built in 1685, the Daggett House is one of the earliest farmhouses in Rhode Island, furnished with glorious antiques.

There is plenty for the audacious traveler. Visit a llama farm or cruise on the Blackstone Valley Explorer, a riverboat that travels the Blackstone River. Go horseback riding in Lincoln woods or shop for antiques in the Glocester village of Chepachet.

Sports fans also know the Blackstone Valley as the home of the Pawtucket Red Sox, the AAA International League affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. For racing fans, Lincoln Greyhound Park has dog racing year round.

The Blackstone Valley welcomes visitors with a combination of small-town hospitality, cultural attractions and outdoor events. A stop in Blackstone Valley provides a welcome relaxing pace for the busy traveler.
