USA - PENNSYLVANIA : SCENIC PENNSYLVANIA ROUTE 6

Route 6, coined “one of America’s most scenic drives” by National Geographic, winds over 400 miles across northern Pennsylvania on its way through the United States.

Railroad buffs can experience the history of railroad and steam locomotion at museums and historic sites sprinkled throughout the Pocono region, including the Steamtown National Historic Site and Roundhouse and Technology Museums in Scranton.

Visitors can tour and travel 300 feet below the earth through winding passages as miners narrate the history of Scranton’s Lackawanna Coal Mine.

The French Azilum Historic Site was a refugee camp for French who were trying to escape imprisonment or death at the hands of the Revolution in the late 1700s. According to legend, even Marie Antoinette, the queen of France, and her two children were to settle there. Today, visitors can tour the grounds, the log cabin museum and the LePorte House, built in 1836 by the son of one of the colonial founders.

The impressive Kinzua Dam is located near the Kinzua Bridge, once the world’s highest and longest railroad bridge and designated a National Engineering Landmark.

Swimming, water skiing and boating are popular ways to get around Lake Wallenpaupack, the 13-mile lake located in the heart of the Pocono Mountains.

Referred to as the “Niagara” of Pennsylvania, Bushkill Falls is a scenic wonder of eight waterfalls, including the 100-foot Main Falls.

The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area spans 40 miles of the eastern border of Pennsylvania and is a favorite for hiking, biking and scenic drives.

A 40-mile view awaits visitors from the lookouts of breathtaking Pine Creek Gorge, better known as the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. The gorge boasts rock formations more than 350 million years old, is 50 miles long, 1,000 feet deep and is a popular spot for trout fishing, rafting and canoeing.

The Allegheny National Forest region offers 500,000 acres of wilderness encompassing 1,000 miles of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails for outdoor enthusiasts.

Stargazing is the most popular activity at Cherry Springs State Park. It’s the only Official Dark Sky Park, as designated by astronomers, in the northeast.

It’s not uncommon in Benezette and the surrounding area to hear the mating calls and see the free roaming herd of almost 600 elk.

Bird watching, hiking, biking and swimming along the beaches are all reasons why visitors flock to Presque Isle State Park peninsula. It’s also home to Sunset Point, where National Geographic claims you can see some of the best sunsets in the world.

Small town charm is exemplified by the 19th century architecture of the quaint, small town of Towanda.

The charming town of Wellsboro is famous for its gas-lit Main Street, antique stores and flea markets, as well as its proximity to the natural wonders of the Pine Creek Gorge.

Ridgway is home to the International Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous each winter and a number of restored Victorian mansions from the lumber boom era.

In Erie, visitors can see Commodore Perry’s flagship, the US Brig Niagara, and the Erie Maritime Museum, where visitors can see multimedia and interactive programs that illustrate the Battle of Lake Erie from the War of 1812. ERIE HOTELS

The Dorflinger Glass Museum in White Mills pays tribute to the life and accomplishments of the famed glassmaker Christian Dorflinger who produced world-renowned pieces, some of which graced the tables of presidents Lincoln and Wilson. The museum is recognized as having the largest display of Dorflinger glass in the nation.

The Ninth Wonder of the World? That’s what some call the Tunkhannock Viaduct in Nicholson. Completed in 1915, it was heralded as the largest concrete bridge in the world and is still used today.

Hank’s Frozen Custard, located in Meadville, was established in 1952 and continues to use antique machinery to make their frozen custard, a process they like to show off to their customers. Hank’s offers a unique flavor of the day in addition to their extensive menu.

Route 6 Diner, near Allegheny National Forest, is home to the "Huberburger,” named for the fact that Smethport is in the center or Hub of the county.
