USA - OREGON - LINCOLN CITY : HEART OF THE OREGON COAST™
by Ursula Retief

new jersey, usa

If you and the family are at a loose end any mid-October through Memorial Day, head for Lincoln City on the Central Oregon Coast and go treasure hunting for gorgeous handcrafted glass floats.

At this time every year Lincoln City places some 2,000 floats, a few each day, along seven miles of public beaches for lucky beachcombers to harvest and to keep. The event, “Finders Keeper”, kicks off with a glass float gala and the Glass Galore Art Fair in October.

If you can only make it to this beautiful beach community in March or May, or June, or, heck, any month, don’t fret.

On the beach you’ll be pocketing agates, sand dollars and shells of all varieties. Then make your way to the Jennifer L. Sears Glass Art Studio where you can walk in off the street and blow your own glass float (or a glass bowl, a starfish or a paperweight) with the help of the professional glass blowers. The studio is so designed that you can watch the professional glass-blowers creating the most exquisite objects ... or watch the family blowing their own unique keepsakes.

Lincoln City is, of course, internationally known for glassblowing.
Oregon's oldest glassblowing operation, Alder House III, is nestled in a grove of ancient alder trees, with its nearby neighbors, Mossy Creek Pottery, featuring the works of over 60 Northwest artists.

Lincoln City is at the heart of the Oregon Coast, a place where antique shops and used bookstores are found everywhere, where colorful kites are part of the scenery – Lincoln City is known as the Kite Capital of the World. The gray whale migration happens twice a year, generally concentrated in late December and late March, but some 200 whales liked Lincoln City so much that they couldn’t bring themselves to leave so they made it their permanent home. The whales come so close to shore at times you don't even need binoculars.

Nor do you need to look far for somewhere to eat in Lincoln City. It is packed with restaurants and eateries. But before you do, you may want to slip into the Pacific Coast Center for Culinary Arts where you can learn a thing or two about the abundant foods and culinary heritage of the Pacific Northwest.

Award-winning chef Rob Pounding, owner of the acclaimed Blackfish Cafe restaurant in Lincoln City, took us in hand and showed us how to tell the difference, blindfolded, between a chinook and a silver salmon (our lips are sealed; if you’re desperate to learn the secret, head for Lincoln City).

Programs at the Center include cooking classes and demonstrations of all kinds of cuisine, not just Pacific Northwest, teaching time-tested methods and skills.

If you’re peckish you could always go mussel harvesting at one of the many tide pools or go crabbing or clamming in Siletz Bay. You’ll need a licence but that’s easily obtainable in Lincoln City.

Having had your taste buds whetted, head for the Bay House Restaurant, Lincoln City’s pride and joy, where the splendid cuisine is matched only by the outlook over Siletz Bay... a view that is the whipped cream on the cake for Stephen Wilson, the owner. The wine list is immense, a selection of 1,700 with an astonishing 32 of them available by the glass with your meal.

On our first evening we headed for the Rogue River Room at the Chinook Winds Casino Resort where LadY Luck was certainly with us, for over dinner we met the delightful “Papa” Harold Lloyd, a former GI who graduated from the Berkeley Wine Institute in 1957 as part of the GI Education Plan. He traveled to Germany for his degree as a Wine Connoisseur and is passionate about the wines he recommends as the sommelier. Over a superb meal, Papa Harold shared his knowledge and years of experience with us.

Oregon’s only oceanfront casino, Chinook Winds is an enterprise of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians of Oregon. Although the primary focus of Chinook Winds is gaming and entertainment geared toward adults, a separate building is devoted to a youth center, which includes video games and a daycare center. Its 18-hole golf course frames the city gateway. A 2,000-person theater offers live, Las Vegas-style headline entertainment.

Lady Luck will be around, be assured, when you’re hunting for those glass floats on the Lincoln City beaches.
