USA - OREGON : ALONG THE SPECTACULAR CENTRAL OREGON COAST by Ursula & Eldrid Retief ![]() Highway 101, the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway one of the few roads designated an All American Road provides travelers with easy access to Lincoln County’s golf courses, miles of uncrowded public beaches, fishing charters and guides, shopping, historical sites, museums, unique dining, shellfish harvesting, hang gliding, surfing, kayaking, public parks and waysides, campgrounds, hiking trails, bike trails, covered bridges and magnificent lighthouses. At the northernmost point is Cascade Head, a spectacular coastal headland haven for rare plants, wildlife and native prairie grasses. Take a short detour to Drift Creek Covered Bridge, one of four covered bridges in Lincoln County and dedicated to its rugged pioneers. At Fogarty Creek State Recreation Area the creek and ocean meet, and at Boiler Bay State Scenic Viewpoint you can stop to watch wild surf action on the rocky spurs. Heading down the coast, colorful kites and wind socks welcome you to the ocean and the resort town of Lincoln City. With sprawling Devil’s Lake on the north side and Siletz Bay, a prime location for bird watching and observing harbor seals, to the south, it’s virtually surrounded by water, wildlife and recreation. Where the Siletz River enters Siletz Bay you’ll find Kernville where the 1971 film about a logging family in Oregon, “Sometimes a Great Notion”, was filmed. Find out why Lincoln City is so well known for its glassblowing by visiting Alder House III, Oregon’s oldest glassblowing operation nestled in a grove of ancient alder trees and just nearby Mossy Creek Pottery where you can see the work of some 60 Northwest artists. Farther south, Depoe Bay is the site of the world’s smallest navigable harbor and Spouting Horns that shoot geysers above the seawall at high tide. A number of whales make the Central Oregon Coast their year-round residence, with phenomenal spring and winter migrations bringing in even more curious travelers from all over. Depoe Bay and Newport charter boat companies offer many opportunities for whale-watching tours. Drop in on the Whale Watching Centre in Depoe Bay where Oregon Parks and Recreation Department park rangers will answer your questions and help you find whales to watch. Take a stroll on Moolack Beach, a huge undeveloped sandy beach north of Newport. Farther on, keep your camera handy to capture the Coast’s most photographed seascape, Cape Foulweather and the churning waves at Devil’s Punch Bowl. Lincoln County is home to two lighthouses. The BLM operates the Lighthouse Interpretive Center on the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area at the north end of Newport, with guided tours available of the operating Yaquina Head lighthouse. The historic Yaquina Bay Lighthouse gives travelers a glimpse of turn-of-the-century living through its interpretive museum and gift shop located in the former lighthouse-keeper’s home overlooking the Pacific Ocean off Highway 101. By this time you’ll be ready to hit the sack so you could be heading for Ocean House Inn. If there was such a thing as a 10-star B&B then Ocean House Inn would be it. It is set in the north end of Newport in an incomparable oceanfront setting on the bluff above Agate Beach. Innkeepers Charmaine & Lex will look after your every need. Right next door in the park-like setting is Tyee Lodge. From these two properties you can walk down their private trail to the beach and tide pools. Located at the north end of Newport, Tyee Lodge and Ocean House Inn are just a few minutes from all of Newport’s attractions, including the Bayfront, Hatfield Marine Science Center, and the Oregon Coast Aquarium, Nye Beach historic oceanfront village, and the two lighthouses. After Newport we take a detour along the scenic Yaquina Bay Road to Toledo, a quaint but historic small town built on the hillsides surrounding the Yaquina River. Many renowned artists live in Toledo and several fine antique stores have attracted collectors to Toledo. Some of the small but interesting towns and cities in this neck of the woods are Elk City, Burnt Woods, Chitwood, Eddyville, Harlan, Siletz, Logsden and Seal Rock. On the way back to Highway 101 we stop off at the Oregon Oyster Farms , founded in 1907, where you can watch fresh Yaquina Bay oysters being harvested daily. The superb Oregon coastal scenery continues through to Waldport and Yachats to the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area where you can watch the waves rush in and out of Devil’s Churn. Waldport is a quiet city with miles of sandy beaches, forest roads, hiking trails, wilderness areas and a picturesque bay. At the Alsea Bay Interpretive Center, next to the Alsea Bay Bridge, Mike Rivers of Oregon State Parks talks animatedly about the design and history of the Alsea Bridge and provides an informative run-down on area landmarks. Governor Patterson State Park, just a short hike from the mouth of Alsea Bay, is a beachcomber’s delight. .... miles of flat, sandy beach where you can windsurf, crab, or just watch the seals. Tidewater on the Alsea River east of Waldport is the home of White Wolf Sanctuary, a rescue facility for Arctic wolves.[ Just a few minutes before we reach Yachats we come across the Greenhouse Marketplace, an innovative art complex on the Coast highway where the finest in local and regional arts and crafts is embodied in free-standing, state-of-the-art buildings. It is home to the Earthworks Gallery which represents over 150 artists. Adjacent to the gallery is a garden featuring contemporary outdoor sculpture. Touchstone Gallery carries works from a large selection of Northwest Artists and Craftsmen; and Wave Gallery exhibits fine photography. Yachats, pronounced YAH-hots, derived from the Chinook Indian word, Yahuts, meaning “dark water at the foot of the mountain”, is a charming little resort village. Its uncrowded beaches are promising for agate and fossil hunting, birding, hiking and strolling, fishing, clamming, kite flying or picnicking. Its basalt headlands meet some of the most dramatic surf action in the world, attracting photographers and storm watchers, especially during the spectacular winter storms that arrive in December, January, and February. At the hub of Yachats is the historic pub and cafe Drift Inn where you can have breakfast, lunch and dinner with live music every night. It’s a fun place and don’t leave without taking their yummy Ginger Dressing home with you. Park at the Yachats State Recreation Area for a view of the Yachats river as it meets the Pacific Ocean, and to see the wild waves and gray whale migration. Immediately south of Yachats is Cape Perpetua Scenic Area. From here it’s not far to picturesque Heceta Head Lighthouse and Sea Lion Caves, the world’s only mainland viewing area for Steller sea lions. As the rugged cliffs give way to graceful sand dunes, you’ll arrive in Florence, a city that explodes with wild rhododendrons in spring. Florence is the gateway to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, a 47-mile sandbox with areas designated for bird watching and dune riding.
