USA - OHIO - COLUMBUS : A SLICE OF AMERICAN LIFE

new jersey, usa

This Midwestern city serves up a tempting slice of American life, from the brick-paved streets winding through historic German Village and the Brewery District, to the urban energy pulsating through the restaurants, clubs and shops of the Arena District and Short North.

Although Columbus was only a small frontier village when it was founded in 1812, it has grown into the largest city in Ohio and the 15th largest in the nation. Rapid growth began in the 1830s, when many German immigrants settled in the Columbus area. They built their homes in German Village and helped to fuel the Columbus economy with their prosperous breweries along Front Street, known today as the Brewery District.

Ohio’s capital city is centrally located in the state with two major interstates converging downtown, making it an easy drive to find the excellent arts and entertainment, attractions, restaurants and shopping options the city offers. With many distinctive neighborhoods, visitor highlights include German Village/Brewery District; Downtown; Short North Arts District, Arena District, The Ohio State University; Easton Town Center; Clintonville and Olde Worthington.

The Short North Arts District is a sophisticated downtown neighborhood with a mix of restored row houses, art galleries, intriguing boutiques, cool bars and fine dining. The area’s myriad galleries offer contemporary photography, abstract painting, African-American sculpture, edgy experimental works and colorful folk art.

The Arena District was once best known for a complex of dark and crumbling buildings that occupied several blocks – the old Ohio State Penitentiary. Now this once-depressed area has been transformed into a thriving business, sports, dining and entertainment district.

The brick streets, houses and businesses of the two mid-1800s neighborhoods, German Village/Brewery District represent the Germanic influence and heritage in Columbus.

A paradise for booklovers, The Book Loft on South Third Street in German Village has seven levels, 32 rooms and covers a city block. Another must-see shopping spot, the Greater Columbus Antique Mall, is reputed to have ghosts in addition to antiques. Housed in a vintage late 1800s building, it is packed with one-of-a-kind finds.

Shopping works up an appetite and one celebrated eatery is located in the cellars of a 19th-century brewery. True to the district’s business heritage, locally brewed porter or pale ale can still be found.

Columbus has a thriving, vibrant arts community. Three historic downtown theaters, the Southern, Ohio and Palace, host many of the city’s performing arts including: Columbus Symphony Orchestra, BalletMet Columbus, ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, and Columbus Jazz Orchestra.

Some Columbus highlights are the Columbus Museum of Art, known for its outstanding collection of late 19th- and early 20th-century American and European modern art; Center of Science and Industry (COSI) where children and adults can explore more than 300 interactive exhibits; the Wexner Center for the Arts, a celebrated contemporary arts center; and Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

The Thurber House is a literary center for writers and readers and a museum of James Thurber memorabilia. The home is furnished as it would have been while Thurber lived there with his parents, two brothers and several canine companions.
