USA - NORTH DAKOTA : LEGENDARY ADVENTURE IN NORTH DAKOTA![]() Today’s outdoor adventurers seek the exhilaration of riding to the highest peak on the Maah Daah Hey Trail; the peace-restoring feeling of canoeing the tranquil Sheyenne River; the thrill of a close encounter with wildlife in a wildlife refuge, national park or state park. The Legendary Lewis & Clark Expedition spent more consecutive days at Fort Mandan than any other place along the Lewis and Clark Trail. They constructed Fort Mandan as their winter camp near the Missouri River and present-day Washburn (35 miles north of Bismarck). The Corps of Discovery was greatly aided by Sakakawea (or Sacagawea), the American Indian guide and interpreter. At Washburn, the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center has a river view, replica dugout canoe and gallery devoted to Karl Bodmer prints and actual artifacts from the expedition. Here you can wrap yourself in a buffalo robe or carry a baby cradle on your back like Sakakawea carried her son. You can listen to the peaceful sound of a Mandan Indian flute or a high-stepping fiddle tune like those played by Pierre Cruzatte on the expedition. This section of the Missouri River is undeveloped and appears much as it did two centuries ago. Fort Mandan, the party’s winter headquarters, has been reconstructed nearby. The North Dakota Heritage Center on the Capitol Grounds in Bismarck acts as a time machine. Through its doors visitors can discover Plains Indian life, the Old West or bonanza wheat farms. Step from an Indian camp into a homesteader’s yard as you wander through the vast displays of history and culture that make North Dakota unique. Close to half of North Dakota’s population can trace its heritage to a Scandinavian country. Its Scandinavian heritage is preserved in museums and historic sites across the state, and Scandinavian festivals are well-attended annually. In fact, the largest Scandinavian festival in North America, the Norsk Høstfest in Minot, is regarded in Northern Europe as an outstanding resource for authentic, Old-World Scandinavian lore, craftsmanship and entertainment. There’s a common thread running through every one of the many cultures in North Dakota North Dakota's friendliness. In fact, “Dakota” is a Sioux word meaning “friend". North Dakota hosts one of the nation’s largest American Indian powwows the United Tribes International Powwow. Documentation of North Dakota’s rich culture and heritage is found everywhere. Bismarck/Mandan hosts the state’s flagship museum and a significant historical fort and Indian village. The North Dakota Heritage Center on the Capitol grounds has exceptional exhibits from the age of dinosaurs to today’s technology. Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, outpost for the 7th Cavalry, features General George Custer’s reconstructed home. The grounds overlook On-A-Slant Indian Village, occupied by the Mandan until 1750, and today include reconstructed earthlodges. Perfect places to get a taste of North Dakota heritage: Plains Art Museum, Fargo; Bagg Bonanza Farm, Mooreton; Scandinavian Heritage Park, Minot; Gunlogson Homestead and Nature Preserve, Cavalier; Icelandic State Park, Cavalier; Mandan during Rodeo Days; and Three Affiliated Tribes Museum, New Town. The Gateway to North Dakota Looking for excitement in the big city, North Dakota style? The Red River Valley, your gateway to North Dakota, is where it is at. As North Dakota’s entry points from the east, the cities of Fargo and Grand Forks have entertainment, shopping, big-time sporting teams and events. You can stay at an upscale hotel or relax in a quiet bed and breakfast. No matter what comforts you are looking for, the gateway cities will help you create your own legendary experience.
