USA - NEW YORK : EXPLORING NEW YORK'S CULTURAL TREASURES

New York State is home to more than 1,000 museums – with exhibits ranging from ancient artifacts to the world’s largest toy collection.

While many of New York’s museums are world-famous, others are just waiting to be discovered.

Each year, millions of visitors from across the world flock to New York City to experience its unique culture. For many, the trip would not be complete without a visit one of the city’s many museums.

While the American Museum of Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum of Art are always popular destinations, there are several lesser known museums that offer unique collections:

• New York City Police Museum: Fans of television shows like “Law and Order” will love learning the history of New York’s finest – the New York Police Department (NYPD). This Lower Manhattan museum includes a firearms training simulator that demonstrates how the NYPD trains its officers. Memorabilia showcases the development of police work over time with exhibits that include everything from police cars and badges to notorious criminals and forensics.

• New York City Fire Museum: A former Manhattan firehouse is now home to one of the nation’s most extensive collections of fire-related art and artifacts, dating back to the 18th century. Painted leather buckets, helmets, pre-Civil War hand-pumped fire engines and horse drawn vehicles tell the story of New York City’s famous firefighters. Guided tours are available for groups of 20 or more and include an interactive fire safety and prevention presentation.

• National Lighthouse Museum: Children can use lighthouses to navigate their own ships to safety at this interactive museum located at the historic US Lighthouse Service Depot on Staten Island. Learn about the real-life adventures of lighthouse keepers and how the museum’s large collection of Fresnel lenses helped light the seas. For more than 100 years, the museum’s location was the main depot and center for US lighthouse service operations in the country.

Across New York State, many museums combine world-class collections with important glimpses into he USA’s cultural and economic history. Several of these include:

• Strong Museum in Rochester : Home to the National Toy Hall of Fame, the Strong Museum’s collections of toys, miniatures and dolls are the largest in the world. Both young and old will enjoy the hands-on exhibits, including characters from Sesame Street and Mister Rogers; a television studio, grocery store and time travel.

• Corning Museum of Glass in the Finger Lakes Wine Country: Home to the world’s most comprehensive and celebrated collection of glass, this museum showcases the evolution of glass over the last 3,500 years. Witness a hot glassblowing demonstration.

• National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown: Experience the magic of America’s pastime through hands-on exhibits and an impressive collection of memorabilia. See the spikes Curt Schilling wore in game two of the 2004 World Series when he helped erase the Red Sox curse, earning the win despite having sutures in his ankle to protect a torn sheath around his Achilles tendon.

• I LOVE NEW YORK is making it easier and more affordable to take advantage of many of the state’s exciting museums with its complimentary I LOVE NEW YORK Culture Card. It provides discounts and special offers at 30 art venues, parks and historic sites across New York State.

Participating museums include: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of American Financial History, Seneca Iroquois National Museum and the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film.
