USA - NEW YORK : SHUFFLE OFF TO BUFFALO
By Giovanni Centurione

Come along and shuffle, shuffle off to Buffalo. That’s what many people that leave here tell their friends and family. And why not, with Buffalo’s grand architecture, growing art scene, live theatre, hip shopping districts, historic neighborhoods and more.

Where can I start to describe this unique city along the shore of Lake Erie, only a 20-minute drive from the thundering Niagara Falls. Many people ask how Buffalo got its name, but no one is exactly sure. The most widely accepted (and romantic) theory is that the early French explorers of the area came upon the Niagara River and christened it “Beau Fleuve” or “Beautiful River”. Over time, the area’s English speaking settlers began to pronounce the words as “Buffalo”.

Hailed by American Style magazine for its variety of arts venues, Buffalo today is a top cultural arts destination and an architectural museum. Buffalo City Hall is one of the most outstanding Art Deco buildings in the country.

For unique gifts, clothes, galleries, souvenirs and more check out the Elmwood-Allentown neighborhoods. There you’ll find upscale boutique stores, record stores, coffeehouses, fine dinning, theatre, and other unique businesses.

The streets off Elmwood Ave. and Allen St. have a lot of Victorian homes and parks to enjoy, especially for the architectural buffs. It’s a 24-hour neighborhood with restaurants that never close and bars that close at 4am.

If classical music interest you, the Allentown Neighborhood is home to the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra located in Kleinhans Music Hall at Symphony Circle. Kleinhans is also known internationally for its graceful, curving lines, and detailed interior spaces.

Buffalo has many art galleries, free exhibits and public art for all to enjoy. Buffalo’s largest and most recognized art gallery is the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, located between the Elmwood Village and Historic Delaware Park. This is an outstanding center for modern and contemporary art. Its permanent collection includes work by Gauguin, Van Gogh, Picasso, Braque, Matisse, Warhol and many more.

In the daytime, enjoy the fountains at Fountain Plaza on Main Street, view many of the free art galleries, such as CEPA Gallery located in the Historic Market Arcade Building (Buffalo’s first mini mall). CEPA has three floors of art work open to the public, from paintings, photography, video and film.

The Theatre District offers many live theatres, dinner theatre, cabaret, classy restaurants, and unique gift shops. For a Broadway show, Shea’s Performing Arts Center is THE place to see it. Shea’s is a historic theatre, built in the style of a European opera house in 1926. When not showing Broadway Shows, Shea’s also offers shows concerts, a classic film series, and a historic walking tour. There are close to ten theatres alone in this two-block district and many more throughout the city.

Near the Theatre District is the Chippewa Street Entertainment District, which is the hippest place to be if you love the nightlife. This main drag includes many dance clubs, bars, restaurants, and fine hotels.

A place most people hang out in this district is Spot Coffee at the corner of Delaware and Chippewa Streets, known to locals as just “SPOT”. This is the place where people of all walks of life hang out and feel relaxed by it’s mix of art and friendly employers who make sure all their customers feel special. This is the place to see new art displays, hear poets and singers, and even local celebrities are spotted here, from newscasters to radio DJ’s, even locals who made it big like Ani Defranco, Goo Goo Dolls and more. Other must see places to eat here are Buffalo Chop House, Bijou Grille, Papaya, and The Chocolate Bar.

Want to get cooled off on a hot day, Buffalo’s waterfront is the coolest place to be. At the Erie Basin Marina, which is where Jim Carry was walking on water in the movie “Bruce Almighty” you can enjoy the city’s unique skyline, boat rides on the Miss Buffalo or Niagara Clipper, explore the Naval & Military Park, the largest inland naval park in the nation, and take a stroll through Veterans Park with its beautiful monuments, benches and gardens.

Among the museums are Buffalo Museum of Science, the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum and the Pierce-Arrow Museum.

If you love to eat, then Buffalo is home to many dishes, including Buffalo Wings and Beef on Weck. Yes it’s true, the Buffalo Wings were started right here, in the early 1960’s at the now famous Anchor Bar at Main & North St. What is Beef on weck? It’s a thinly sliced roast beef on a salted roll with horseradish which started out in a German–Polish Neighborhood in the city’s East Side many decades ago.

Planning on coming to Buffalo? Anytime of the year is perfect, this city always has events, street parties, and festivals. Buffalo is known to many as one big party town for the whole family to enjoy. Some events: Taste of Buffalo, Allentown Arts Festival, Thursday at the Square (Free Concerts every Thursday from May to September), and National Buffalo Wing Festival during the first weekend in September.
