USA - NEVADA : NEVADA'S INTRIGUING STATE PARKS  Giant beehive brick ovens, Civil War fort ruins resembling a western Stonehenge, old mining ghost towns and scenic alpine lakes are just part of Nevada's fascinating and diverse state park system.Founded more than 50 years ago, Nevada's network of 20 state parks stretches from the mysterious Valley of Fire near Las Vegas, Nevada's first state park, to beautiful Lake Tahoe in northwestern Nevada. In picturesque Genoa, in Northern Nevada, visitors will find the Mormon Station Historic State Monument. The park is a replica of a trading post built on that spot in 1851 by Nevada's first white settlers. Further north is the Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park. The park consists of 13,000 acres of stunning Sierra Nevada wilderness, including three miles of lake shoreline with facilities for swimming, picnicking and other day uses at Sand Harbor. The state park also features developed boat launching ramps, hiking trails and cross-country skiing in the winter months. Washoe Lake State Park is located halfway between Reno and Carson City. Situated in a quiet, fertile valley that affords a breathtaking view of the Sierra Nevada, the park contains facilities for hiking, bird watching, horseback riding, fishing, picnicking, wind surfing and sailing. About 12 miles east of Carson City is Dayton State Park. A nature trail along the nearby Carson River offers bird-watching opportunities. One of the most intriguing of Nevada's state parks is the Fort Churchill Historic State Monument. The park includes the preserved ruins of a US Army fort built in 1860 and abandoned 10 years later. Tree-shaded picnic and camping areas are provided along the Carson River. Fort Churchill is located off Alternate US 95, eight miles south of Silver Springs, and is open all year. The Lahontan State Recreation Area, 18 miles west of Fallon, includes Lahontan Reservoir, with 72 miles of shoreline. Fishing, swimming, boating and water-skiing are popular here. Just north of Hawthorne is Walker Lake, a starkly beautiful high desert lake. Prehistoric swimming dinosaurs and a turn-of-the-century mining camp are the chief components in the Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park, 23 miles east of Gabbs. Visitors will find the fossils of ancient Ichthyosaurs, giant fish lizards millions of years old, and the ghost town of Berlin, which has been preserved in a state of "arrested decay." Park rangers offer tours throughout the year. Travelers on Interstate 80 will find the Rye Patch State Recreation Area about 22 miles east of Lovelock. Hidden in Nevada's northeastern corner is the scenic Wild Horse State Recreation Area north of Elko which offers picnicking, camping on improved sites, comfort stations and a boat launch area. Two of the state's most unique parks are the Ward Charcoal Ovens Historic State Monument and Cave Lake State Recreation Area in eastern Nevada near Ely The Ward Charcoal Ovens are six giant beehive-shaped brick ovens constructed in the 1870s as smelters of nearby copper mines. The site, five miles south of Ely and 11 miles by dirt road, is open all year. Cave Lake is a 32-acre reservoir that offers excellent trout fishing, swimming, boating, picnicking and camping. Located eight miles south of Ely and seven miles east on Success Summit Road, the park is open all year but access may be restricted in the winter. Nevada's smallest state park is the Belmont Courthouse Historic State Monument in Southern Nevada. The courthouse, built in 1874 and abandoned in 1905, is situated in the partial ghost town of Belmont. Belmont is 45 miles northeast of Tonopah via Nevada 376 and 82, including a short stretch of good graded road. The greatest clustering of state parks is in southeastern Nevada. The area has no less than four parks, including Spring Valley State Park, Echo Canyon State Recreation Area, Cathedral Gorge State Park and Beaver Dam State Park. Nevada's fabulous Valley of Fire State Park provides a fascinating glimpse of red Jurassic Period sandstone formed 150 million years ago. The stone has been shaped by nature into a variety of intriguing formations. Spring Mountain Ranch State Park, located within the Red Rock Canyon National Recreation Lands, is a lush former resort once owned by reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes. The unique park includes a visitor center and guided tours. Spring Mountain Ranch also is a working cattle ranch with livestock roaming its 500 acres. Visitors can tour the corrals and stables or enjoy the posh elegance of the ranch house retreat. The park is located 15 miles west of Las Vegas via West Charleston Boulevard. Nevada's newest park is Floyd R. Lamb State Park, 10 miles north of Las Vegas off US 95. The park offers a variety of day uses in tree-shaded groves and along a series of small lakes.
