USA - NEVADA - RENO-TAHOE : ADVENTURE PLACE

Why not spend your vacation in the Most Beautiful Place in the world? Or the Richest Place on Earth? Or how about a visit to the Most Eventful City in America?

Nevada's Reno-Tahoe, America's Adventure Place, is where you'll find all three – from unlimited outdoor recreation to 24-hour Nevada-style gaming to top name entertainment and the USA's largest special events plus a booming arts and culture district in the heart of downtown Reno.

Most of the territory is located on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada range, and the hub of activity is the twin cities of Reno and Sparks.

There's always something special going on, year-around. The National Championship Air Races in September are the country's top competitive aviation event.

Hot August Nights is a-week long celebration of 1950s music, cars and style. The Great Reno Balloon Race fills the skies with hundreds of colorful floating baubles. And frequent outdoor food festivals allow visitors to sample a wide variety of ethnic culinary creations.

One of Reno's proudest possessions is the William F. Harrah National Automobile Museum, located downtown on the banks of the picturesque Truckee River. It contains an impressive collection of rare and classic cars dating from the turn of the century, but what sets it apart is the way the cars are displayed.

The museum is arranged around "streets" depicting various times in American history. A gleaming '39 Packard is parked outside an art-deco styled theater; a Studebaker Silver Hawk sits in suburban garage, its radio tuned to a speech by President Kennedy; a '55 Chevy gets a lube job at the corner gas station.

There are some 30 other museums in the Reno-Tahoe area including Nevada's only accredited fine-arts museum, the Nevada Museum of Art (NMA), the Stewart Indian Museum, offering a historical look at the Native American culture, the Nevada State Railroad Museum, offering a glimpse into Nevada’s heritage as well as home to the mint, to name a few.

Both Reno and Sparks offer maximum value in food, lodging and entertainment at a minimum cost, which means you can afford to rent a car and explore the territory.

Heading south after trying your luck at one of Reno's wonderful casinos, turn east onto State Highway 341 and drive up the mountain to Virginia City.

In its prime during the 1870s, Virginia City was the nation's biggest producer of gold and silver. That gold financed the Union cause during the Civil War, and was one of the reasons Nevada was granted statehood, October 31, 1864.

Still very much alive, Virginia City is a living museum. Most of the saloons on the main street have remained in business since they were opened, and most haven't been restored. Several furnished homes built by the local mining barons are open for tours. The revived Virginia and Truckee Railroad can take the visitor for a ride to adjacent Gold Hill, which once rivaled Virginia City in prosperity and now is home to the state's oldest Hotel, circa 1858.

Virginia City is home of the annual International Camel Races held the weekend after Labor Day, the Mountain Oyster Festival, and other unique celebrations in the spirit of the Wild West.

Reno-Tahoe has 43 public golf courses and seven private courses all within 90 minutes of the Reno-Tahoe International Airport.

In the winter there is never a dull moment on the slopes of Reno-Tahoe. Try any of the 18 world-class ski, board and cross-country resorts all within 90 minutes of the airport.

From leisurely recreational trails just minutes from downtown Reno to mountains that challenge with intermediate trails and awe-inspiring vistas overlooking the Reno-Sparks and Carson valley, as well as Lake Tahoe, to the ultimate adventurer challenge – the 165-mile Tahoe Rim Trail that circles the Tahoe basin for true diehards.

As North America's largest alpine lake, the water in Lake Tahoe is so pure that it offers visibility to 75 feet below the surface.  In addition to Tahoe, water enthusiasts can take to boats, skis, wakeboards, kayaks, catamarans, wind surfers and sail boats at any number of desert and alpine lakes including Pyramid Lake, the second largest lake in the region, and Donner Lake.
