USA - MISSISSIPPI : EASY TO TRAVEL

Today’s travelers are seeking experiences that fulfill and enrich them. Mississippi offers the opportunity to be welcomed and not feel like a visitor. It is the people that travelers end up remembering about a visit to Mississippi – their friendliness, storytelling and pride in their state.

Because Mississippi is easy to travel, a drive north to south is about six hours, east to west is less than three. Although Mississippi is compact enough to travel easily, don’t be fooled – within the state's borders are rivers, lakes, beaches, woodlands, deep forests and lush vegetation, wide-open cotton fields, even catfish ponds .... and 24-hour gaming and top name entertainment.

Mississippi is steeped in history and heritage. The Natchez Trace Parkway, which runs from Natchez to Nashville , is more than 8,000 years old. Originally ‘traced’ out by buffalo, the road was then traveled by traders, missionaries, early settlers, and Indians. Today, it is perfect for biking, picnicking, and experiencing living history exhibits.

The original Mississippians were most likely the Choctaw Indians, who date back to the early 1500s and the annual Choctaw Indian Fair is an opportunity to share customs and culture.

Mississippi's Civil War history comes alive in Vicksburg, Port Gibson, and Natchez. Stately antebellum homes celebrate the romance of a bygone era, while Civil War battlefields remind us of the more than 80,000 Mississippians who served as Confederate soldiers.

Corinth is home to a spectacular multi-million dollar Civil War Interpretive Center where re-enactments of famous decisive battles are often held.

Travelers interested in African-American heritage will experience this rich culture of courage, faith, music and food. Perhaps the best place to capture this intense heritage is Mississippi’s African-American cultural center, the Smith Robertson Museum in Jackson.

Mississippi is the birthplace of American music and on any given night, it is still going strong. From the Coast to the Delta to the northern hills, singers and musicians make juke joints, clubs and concert halls rock. Mississippi has produced many of the world’s most renowned musical artists.

The blues, gospel, country, and rock ‘n roll all originated here through the talent of people like Robert Johnson, Jimmie Rodgers, and Elvis Presley. Other greats such as B.B. King, Marty Stuart, Leontyne Price, Charlie Pride, Faith Hill, Cassandra Wilson, Lance Bass, Jimmy Buffett and many more have been inducted into the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame.

In Clarksdale visit the Delta Blues Museum. The Mississippi Delta is the birthplace of Blues music – the place where over 100 blues musicians and singers including Muddy Waters, Charlie Patton and B.B. King began their careers. Blues festivals abound in Mississippi. Some favorites are the Medger Evers Homecoming Blues Festival and the Delta Blues & Heritage Festival.

The Mississippi Symphony Orchestra and The Mississippi Opera offer a more classical musical experience. Jackson is host to the USA International Ballet Competition, in which dancers from around the globe compete every four years.

Music, arts and crafts, barbecue and hot air balloons are all cause for festivals. The Dixie National Livestock Show and Rodeo in Jackson is the second largest rodeo east of the Mississippi, and on the Gulf Coast, everyone comes together to celebrate Mardi Gras.

Fried, broiled, baked, sautéed or steamed – catfish is king in Mississippi. But catfish is not the only delicacy found here. From grits to greens, Mississippi’s unique cuisine will make you want to come back for seconds.

No doubt about it, food is a passion for Mississippians. It celebrates food with festivals, fairs, families and friends. The food does not end with eating. Come to the Delta and learn about the dynamic catfish industry. You can actually witness the process “from pond to plate” in Belzoni, the “Catfish Capital of the World.”

Prepare for adventure in Mississippi's outdoors. There are beautiful sand beaches perfect for lounging in the sun or a day of windsurfing, crystal clear lakes teeming with jumping fish, miles of trails perfect for hiking or bike riding, acres of varying terrain filled with wildlife.

Mississippi has over 24 state parks. The state has more than one million acres for public hunting, with 13 National Wildlife Refuges and 45 state wildlife management areas. With over 100 miles of coastline, plus 706,000 acres of recreational water, there are plenty of opportunities for fishing and water sports.

You can rock climb or water ski; or you can paddle down a quiet stream in a canoe or race over the rapids in a kayak. Bird watching is also a favorite hobby of Mississippi visitors.

With an average temperature of 65 degrees, Mississippi’s wonderful climate is mild and pleasant year-round. The mild climate allows for golfing year-round. With over 140 beautiful golf courses designed by such great names a Pate, Fazio, Palmer, Nicklaus and Irwin, it is no wonder Mississippi is one of the preferred destinations for golf vacations.
