USA - MINNESOTA : WATERFALLS EVERYWHERE  In a state known for its lakes, rivers and streams, it's no wonder that there's always a waterfall along the scenic routes of Minnesota . The sight is mesmerizing: sheets of water plunge over a rocky ledge, crashing into a pool of water far below, sending rainbowed sprays of mist over the rocky river banks. All along the North Shore of Lake Superior, wilderness streams tumble from the heights of the forested Sawtooth Mountains and spill into the big lake. The numerous, spectacular waterfalls and cascades are favorite sights along the North Shore. Elsewhere in Minnesota, some small creeks and rivers are crowned by waterfalls of their own.
Immortalized in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1855 poem "Hiawatha" is Minnehaha Falls in Minnehaha Park, Minneapolis (Godfrey Parkway, just east of Hwy. 55). A selection of the most scenic and accessible waterfalls in Minnesota are: Devil's Kettle on Brule River in Judge C.R. Magney State Park (Hwy. 61; 13 miles NE of Grand Marais); Cascade Falls in Cascade River State Park (Hwy. 61, 17 miles NE of Tofte); Temperance River State Park (Hwy. 61; 26 miles NE of Silver Bay); High Falls of the Baptism River in Tettegouche State Park (Hwy. 61; 4 miles NE of Silver Bay); and Gooseberry Falls in Gooseberry Falls State Park (Hwy. 61, 15 mi. NE of Two Harbors) Also worth a visit are Minneopa Falls in Minneopa State Park, Mankato (Off Hwy. 169 just west of town); Ramsey Falls in Alexander Ramsey Park, Redwood Falls (off Grove St. – Co. Rd. 31); and Winnewissa Falls at Pipestone National Monument (Hwy. 75 just N of Pipestone) The most visited region of of Minnesota is the greater, nine-county Twin Cities area of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Major draws are the region's museums and performing arts, sports venues, zoos and amusement parks but the top attraction in the area (and in the state) is Mall of America which also has The Park at MOA and Underwater Adventures, NASCAR and Jillian's/America Live, all anchored by Bloomingdale's, Macy's, Nordstrom and Sear's. As for shopping, there are also the four "Dales", including Edina's Southdale, the nation's first fully-enclosed, climate-controlled shopping center when it was built in 1956. On a charming smaller scale is antique shopping in the Mississippi River towns of southeastern Minnesota, or the lovely shops of Stillwater or St. Paul's Grand Avenue, or on quaint main streets in the state's many lakeside resort areas. Major destinations in the heavily forested northeast of Minnesota include Duluth, the North Shore and its state parks, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, the Iron Range area, and Voyaguers National Park. The top single attraction is Grand Casino Hinckley. Outdoor recreation is still a top draw for visitors to northeastern Minnesota, but the area's museums, historic sites and casinos are also popular attractions. The top attraction in the north central/west of Minnesota is Grand Casino Mille Lacs near Onamia, followed by Itasca State Park and the headwaters of the Mississippi River. The lakes of this region are a major draw, popular for fishing and boating. The top attraction in southern Minnesota is Cabela's outdoor gear store in Owatonna. The region's numerous state parks are also a major draw. Besides shopping, visitors enjoy the area's historic sites, bike trails and festivals. There are almost 500 golf courses in Minnesota.
