PAUL: HANDSOME TWO-FOR-ONE  The top city tourist attraction in Minnesota provides visitors with a handsome two-for-one: The Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul.Saint Paul, Minnesota's beautiful Capital City along the Mississippi River, has something for everyone, whether it's art or architecture, museums or music, a ride on a riverboat, or shopping at the Mall of America nearby.
The State Capitol and Saint Paul's other architectural masterpiece, The Cathedral of Saint Paul (modeled after Saint Peter's in Rome), both show a Michelangelo influence. This saintly city of cathedrals, culture and Old World charm was once the sinful city of speakeasies, brothel madams and gangster trials and Saint Paul invites you to look back at her unsavory past with historic gangster era tours. Since Saint Paul has carried the best of its past into the present, no visit would be complete without a journey across the Mississippi River to Historic Fort Snelling, a stone fortress where you can relive the outpost life of early Minnesota. The Minnesota Historical Society maintains a "living history museum" at the fort where costumed guides recreate the activities and ceremonies of everyday army life during the 1820s. After a hike through the fort, a short drive along the Mississippi will bring you to Saint Paul's Harriet Island, where you can board a riverboat for a short cruise or enjoy Harriet Island's riverfront with its bike and walking paths, grand staircase to the river, entertainment pavilions and picnic areas. World-class shopping and sidewalk dining paired with cultural and family activities make Minneapolis, the City of Lakes, a wonderful place to visit. Minneapolis's one-of-a-kind theater scene boasts more theater seats per capita than any city outside New York while 22 lakes within the city limits provide an abundance of year-round activities. Visitors will find loads of must-sees in Minneapolis among the city's diverse offerings like The Spoonbridge and Cherry, Minneapolis' giant signature sculpture. The 11-acre Minneapolis Sculpture Garden includes more than 40 works of art. It's just across the street from the renowned Walker Art Center. The Frank Gehry-designed Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum, is a teaching museum for the University of Minnesota and the community Its collection features early 20th-century American artists. Uptown is the center of Minneapolis' hip energy which includes off-beat shopping, late-night dining, vibrant nightlife and up-and-coming music. Part of the Chain of Lakes, Lake Calhoun is a popular site for fishing, windsurfing, swimming, sailing and canoeing. More than three miles of trails for walking, jogging, biking and in-line skating encircle the lake with the Minneapolis skyline as an urban backdrop. Enjoy St. Anthony Falls with a stroll across the Stone Arch Bridge – the only one of its kind to span the Mississippi River. Chronicling Minneapolis's milling history are the nearby Mill Ruins Park and Mill City Museum. For shopping there is the Flagship Target store and the Mall of America, the largest mall in the country with more than 520 stores, 20 sit-down restaurants, a 14-screen movie theater, an amusement park and a 1.2-million gallon walk-through aquarium.
