USA - MICHIGAN - LANSING: GUIDE TO LANSING'S RIVER TRAIL ![]() Among one of the longest urban trails in the country, the River Trail traces the banks of the Grand and Red Cedar rivers and invites users to explore Michigan's Capital City on foot, bike or blades. Your adventure gets underway just west of where it all began the Turner-Dodge House. Built in the early 1850s by James Turner, one of Lansing's early settlers, the Turner-Dodge House is a magnificent reminder of days gone by. With its stately facade and classic entrance, this National Historic Registered House has been completely restored to its original grandeur and is now maintained by the City of Lansing as a Cultural Heritage Center.
Further south, you'll pass the North Lansing Dam/Brenke Fish Ladder. If you're visiting toward the end of summer/early fall, you'll be able watch hundreds of salmon as they make their way upstream. As your River Trail adventure continues, you'll also have your best opportunity to view the Lansing skyline across the river to the west. Time for a snack? The Lansing City Market offers trail users a chance to catch their breath while munching on fresh fruits and vegetables grown by mid-Michigan farmers. Directly to the south of the Market is the Lansing Center the area's premier, riverside convention center. The Center's striking mirrored facade is complimented by well-landscaped grounds, a copper-roofed gazebo and river fountain, making it an ideal place to enjoy the beauty of the city. Your River Trail adventure veers off course for a moment as you ascend to Michigan Avenue, Lansing's main thoroughfare. To the west, you'll find the unique shops and restaurants of downtown Lansing, which surround the magnificent State Capitol. To the east past the convention center, be sure to catch all the action at Oldsmobile Park, home of the Lansing Lugnuts minor league baseball team. Back on the River Trail heading south, a quaint cluster of renovated warehouses known as Museum Drive awaits your discovery. Featuring a community theatre, a hands-on science center, a tribute to the automotive industry, and a one-of-a-kind museum, this unique cul-de-sac is home to the Riverwalk Theatre, Impression 5 Science Center, R.E. Olds Transportation Museum and the Michigan Museum of Surveying. Museum Drive is also where you'll begin your five billion scale-mile journey (two Earth miles) through the solar system on the Planet Walk. Informational plaques indicate the location the planets as you travel one million scale miles with every footstep from the Sun to the planet Pluto. Complete your space adventure near Potter Park Zoo, Lansing's four-season, 100-acre zoological park. Relax with a riverside picnic, rent a canoe or visit with any or all of the over 400 wonders of wildlife who make their home at Potter Park. Your River Trail adventure concludes by connecting to the trails at Michigan State University, home of the MSU Spartans. You'll want to continue your nature expedition with a stroll through one of the many glorious gardens speckled throughout the arbor-like campus. The River Trail system is barrier free with a macadam surface and boardwalk, which skirts out over the river at frequent intervals to provide scenic vistas and easy use.
