USA - MARYLAND - BALTIMORE : CHARMING HISTORIC NEIGHBORHOODS![]() The crown jewel of Baltimore, the scenic Inner Harbor is home to dozens of retail stores, restaurants and attractions all within walking distance of more than 20 major hotels and the Baltimore Convention Center. The fun and festive atmosphere of the Inner Harbor is enhanced by street entertainers, open-air concerts, fireworks, parades, paddleboats, cruise boats and an outdoor ice skating rink.
They can head for the Baltimore Visitor Center for Heritage Walk, a guided tour connecting 20 historic sites and museums. Other not-to-be-missed attractions include the American Visionary Art Museum, the Maryland Science Center, the National Aquarium in Baltimore and Port Discovery, the Children’s Museum and The Baltimore Zoo,. Charming historic neighborhoods surround the Inner Harbor, each offering their own character, history and cuisine. Little Italy is a pasta lover's paradise with outdoor movies on summer weekends, festivals of San Gabriel and St. Anthony, and two bocce ball courts. Fell's Point is the oldest section of Baltimore and still has the feel of an old English neighborhood with unique shops and plentiful pubs and restaurants. Here you can wander down cobblestone streets with names like Shakespeare, Bond, Fleet and Thames to enjoy the delightful 18th- and 19th-century homes and warehouses. And, there's Harbor East, a bustling waterfront stop with its own attractions, retail shops and restaurants. The best view of the city is from the top of Federal Hill on the south side of the Inner Harbor. The surrounding neighborhood has a variety of boutiques and restaurants and one of the city's most popular markets. Mount Vernon, the cultural center of the city, was the address for the rich and famous during the 18th and 19th centuries. Their legacies include the first architectural monument to George Washington; Peabody Conservatory of Music; The Walters Art Museum; and the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption, the first Roman Catholic cathedral in the United States. And don't forget about Canton to the east. There you will find one of the city's hottest neighborhoods, where old factories have been converted into a thriving retail and entertainment hub. Rich with African American history and culture, Baltimore’s Westside district teemed with stores, markets and restaurants in the early and mid-20th century, and the likes of Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong and Nat King Cole crooned in local nightclubs. Today, visitors can catch an award-winning show at the new Hippodrome Theatre at the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center, enjoy great sports and entertainment at 1st Mariner Arena, visit the shrine to the baseball great at the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum or explore 40 acres of railway history at the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum. And outside the Baltimore Beltway that encircles the city, there’s even more to discover. Head north to experience Baltimore’s equestrian heritage, south to shop the outlets, east for sailing and shore activities and west to behold Maryland’s majestic mountains Baltimore, famed for its old-time Southern hospitality, has just the place to stay from budget motels to swanky hotels.
