USA - LOUISIANA - BATON ROUGE : AUTHENTIC LOUISIANA

Old South beauty, Creole culture, Cajun zest, colorful politics and an all-around good time – the variety of cultural influences in Baton Rouge makes the city a unique and charming place to visit.

Baton Rouge has changed governments 10 times since France flew its flag over the city in 1721. The cuisine is a blend of Creole and Cajun, topped with Italian, German, Spanish, Caribbean and Greek flavorings. Jambalaya is a form of the Spanish rice dish paella.

Native Americans, inhabiting the Baton Rouge area for several thousand years, have influenced the region in cooking and in art. Filé, made from ground sassafras leaves, is commonly used in gumbo, while crafts such as pottery and basketry using native materials, have been passed along through the centuries.

Baton Rouge's architecture reflects a melting pot of styles and periods. African American and Caribbean influences are found in homes and buildings with large balconies, floor to ceiling windows and exterior shutters. Old State Capitol is reminiscent of Greek revival architecture while many plantations have galleried stairwells reminiscent of the Victorian age.

Laura Plantation, a Creole plantation, is a true blend of these multicultural influences. Laura stands out on the Mississippi River with its mustard-colored facade reminiscent of Caribbean homes.

Today Baton Rouge’s rich cultural tradition can be seen in its unique attractions, heard in its Zydeco, Blues and Cajun music, and tasted in its blend of Creole, African American, French and Spanish cuisine.

Baton Rouge has an abundance of fun for families and children of all ages. From bayous and battleships to wildlife and water parks, Baton Rouge offers something for everyone.

At the top of the "must see" list of kids activities is downtown Baton Rouge. Start with the Louisiana Art & Science Museum, housed in a 1920’s train depot. Here you’ll find an impressive collection of fine art along with the Discovery Depot, a creative, interactive area that teaches basic art concepts and the Science Station Gallery & Lab where scientific concepts are demonstrated.

These interactive science exhibits were further enhanced with the Irene W. Pennington Planetarium is among the most sophisticated multimedia presentation facilities in the world. Visitors can also enjoy the planetarium’s hands-on exhibits, including nine giant planets built to scale and a meteorite one billion years older than any Earth rock.

Across the street, check out Louisiana’s Old State Capitol with its many multi-media exhibits and hands on activities including one designed to teach children the voting process.

The USS KIDD & Veterans Memorial Museum, also on the riverfront, is a National Historic Landmark. The museum has many exhibits for the young and old. The ship also offers overnight camping accommodations for youth groups.

Kids of all ages will want to take a ride on the wild side with the Alligator Bayou Swamp Tour, a 90-minute narrative on the history, biology and ecology of the swamp.

A walking tour of an urban swamp is also offered at the Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center where children can enjoy nature trails, wildlife, educational exhibits and a gift shop.

The outdoor odyssey continues with a stop at the Baton Rouge Zoo which features 1,400 animals, train rides, playground and daily elephant shows.

For more animal adventure head to the Global Wildlife Center in nearby Robert where guests are treated to a one-hour wagon tour of more than 2,000 free roaming animals. And yes, you can feed the animals. In fact, Global Wildlife offers food!

The Enchanted Mansion: A Doll Museum, offers a miniature adventure. The museum has exhibits of contemporary and antique dolls including a White House with the Presidents and other dolls from history including Mark Twain.

For a glimpse of plantation life, there is Magnolia Mound Plantation featuring an interactive tour of an early Creole Plantation. Make a splash at Blue Bayou Water Park then ride a roller coaster at Dixie Landin’ Theme Park. Batting Cages and putt-putt golf round out the excitement.
