USA - KANSAS : THE HEART AND SOUL OF AMERICA by Becky Blake ![]() There is no shortage of top attractions in the state, including many that can be found only in Kansas. The Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson is an affiliate of the Smithsonian and has the largest collection of space artifacts outside the Smithsonian's Washington D.C. museum, including the original Apollo 13 command module Odyssey. The unique Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure in Salina is fast becoming a top zoological park with its impressive collection of rare and endangered animals. The zoo’s Wildlife Museum features hundreds of mounted animal displays, all in naturalistic settings. Few towns capture the spirit of the American cowboy as Dodge City, where you can stroll the streets of the Boothill Museum and relive the days of the Old West.
Kansas heritage is deeply rooted in the Native American people and their culture is honored in many museums across the state. You can discover its African-American heritage by visiting the Buffalo Soldier memorials in Junction City and Leavenworth or the historic all-black community of Nicodemus in western Kansas, which is also a National Historic Site. You can reflect on the state's past through famous Kansans. The Eisenhower Center in Abilene honors its favorite son, President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and is one of the nation's top presidential libraries. Atchison honors its famous daughter, aviator Amelia Earhart, with tours of her childhood home and the massive earthwork designed in her likeness. Walk in the prairie in Kansas and you'll experience one of the four remaining untouched tallgrass prairies left in the world. The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Strong City and the Konza Prairie Natural Area near Manhattan are just a few of the places to experience the beauty of the wild prairie. You can experience the beauty of the American bison at two game refuges, Maxwell Wildlife Refuge in Canton and the Sandsage Prairie Buffalo Refuge in Garden City. Bird watching opportunities are in abundance here, too. Cheyenne Bottoms, and Quivira National Wildlife Refuge in Great Bend are both Wetlands of International Importance for migrating shorebirds. Kansas is one of only two states in the nation to have two international wetlands. In a state known for sunflowers and wheat, there are plenty of places to experience the bounty of the harvest in Kansas. The state’s agritourism opportunities include visiting working farms and ranches, enjoying a glass of wine at one of the state’s dozen wineries, picking the freshest of fruits in the many orchards found in Kansas or watching combines harvest the wheat that makes Kansas the breadbasket for the world. It’s no wonder the highway signs declare, “One Kansas Farmer Feeds 128 People and You.” For heart pounding action, plan a trip to one of the state's many motor cross facilities that are fast becoming top tourists draws for visitors from around the country. Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Heartland Park in Topeka and the Dodge City Raceway Park are just a few of the places that offer racing excitement for even the casual race fan. Everyone can be a kid again in Kansas. Wichita's Exploration Place offers a hands-on approach to science and discovery. You can see rare fossils at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History in Hays, including the famed "Fish Within A Fish" fossil, and the Fick Fossil Museum in Oakley with it’s impressive collection of sharks teeth and other fossils found in nearby fields. Whether you travel to the large metro areas of Wichita, Topeka, Lawrence, or Kansas City, or drive through small towns past amber fields of grain you are sure to encounter the same thing: Kansans waiting to welcome you with famed Midwestern, and Kansas, hospitality.
