USA - HAWAII : THE ISLANDS AND THEIR ATTRACTIONS![]() The largest of The Islands of Hawaii, The Big Island has one of the world's most active volcanoes which continues to pour lava into the sea, adding to the shorelines. The Kilauea Visitor Center, located just inside the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, offers visitor information and exhibits. Other places of astonishing beauty on The Big Island include Akaka Falls, Akatsuka Orchid Gardens with one of the largest collections of orchids in Hawaii, Rainbow Falls in Hilo, Nani Mau Gardens and Puuhonua O Honaunau where, up until the early 19th century, Hawaiians who broke a kapu or one of the ancient laws against the gods could seek refuge.
A mix of history and natural wonder is combined at Lapakahi State Historical Park, once an ancient Hawaiian fishing village, and now a swimming and snorkelling spot offering lessons in Hawaiian history and archaeology. Formed some six million years ago, the tropical paradise of Kauai and is the oldest and most northerly of the main Hawaiian Islands. Coconut Coast is an ideal area to experience the beauty of Kauai, especially with a visit to the Wailua area and the dramatic 80-foot Wailua Falls , Nounou Mountain resembling a reclining giant, and the Wailua River, a favorite for kayaking and boating and the only route to the Fern Grotto . Also striking is the Na Pali Coast where cliffs rising as high as 4,000 feet are accessible along the beautiful Kalalau Trail. Hiking, helicopter or rafting trips offer spectacular views of the region. Further natural attractions include Poipu Beach and Waimea Canyon, described by Mark Twain as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific" and wildlife refuges like the Huleia National Wildlife Refuge where the opening scenes of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” were shot, and the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, a refuge for nesting seabirds and an isolated promontory where the lighthouse sits. Nine miles of tropical and mountain landscapes, Lanai offers several attractions including Mt. Lanaihale, a vantage point from which all of Hawaii's islands except Kauai and Niihau can be seen, and Lanai City. one of the most unique villages in America, built in the 1920's by Dole Pineapple Company, with plantation houses painted every color of the rainbow. One of the Magic Isles, Maui has a wealth of fun and cultural attractions including Iao Valley Sate Park Once the site of bloody battles, now includes the Kula Heritage Gardens and the Kula Botanical Gardens. Lahaina Town, the Royal capital of the islands until 1845. The many attractions include the Whalers Village Museum which recounts the history of Lahaina's whaling era from 1825 to 1860 and the Lahaina Kaanapali and Pacific Railroad sugar cane train . Another fun Maui attractions are the is the Maui Ocean Center, a 3-acre, state-of-the-art aquarium and marine park located at Ma'alaea Harbor Village, and Bailey House Museum with treasures of ancient Hawaii set out at this missionary home where the Kings of Hawaii used to live. Natural attractions include Haleakala National Park with the outstanding volcanic landscape of the upper slopes of Haleakala. This is the site where the demigod Maui captured the sun and held it captive to give his mother more daylight hours so her kapa cloth could dry. A public observatory stands on the rim of the volcano’s crater. Although not a large island, Molokai offers infinite variety in its terrain from Halawa Valley, a pristine gorge that follows water falls and pools down to the sea, to Kalaupapa, a national historical park preserving the history and lessons to be learnt of the isolated community where Father Damien once ministered. Access is by air or mule train down a 1,700ft. switch back trail. Apart from the obvious attractions of Honolulu and Waikiki, Oahu the sun and fun capital of the Hawaiian islands has it's own impressive array of historical attractions, from the world famous Bishop Museum with exhibits exploring Hawaii's past, to the sombre Pearl Harbor, where visitors can see the USS Arizona Memorial above the sunken battleship, a tribute to Americans killed during the attack on December 7, 1941. Travelling further back in time, other historical attractions include the Iolani Palace, the official residence of King Kalakaua and his Queen, Kapiolani, from 1882 until the King's death in 1891, and the Polynesian Cultural Center Hawaii’s favorite visitor attraction, showcasing seven Pacific Island villages on 42 tropical acres. Natural landmarks are Hanauma Bay, a delightful sea cove in Koko Head Park with swimming, picnicking, and snorkelling, and Diamond Head, formed by violent steam explosions 300,000 years ago, now offering a spectacular 360-degree view of Honolulu and the coast.
