USA - GEORGIA - SAVANNAH : THE CHARM OF GENTEEL SAVANNAH by Don Derrick ![]() The first to be seduced was her founder General James Edward Oglethorpe and the 120 travelers of the good ship "Anne" who landed on the shores of the Savannah River in 1733. Oglethorpe named the Thirteenth and final American colony Georgia, after England's King George II. Savannah became its first city Oglethorpe laid out Savannah in a series of grids that allowed for wide open streets intertwined with shady public squares and parks. Today, the Historic District is a 2.5-mile walking district full of bistros, quaint shops, green squares and grand architecture. General Oglethorpe's vision of southern hospitality and a genteel way of life is still alive in the faces of those who call Savannah home. Bits and pieces of Savannah’s rich, colorful history adorn virtually every corner of the downtown area. The stately mansions, its streets lined with moss draped oaks, and massive churches give the city an unique flavor, much of it celebrated in John Berendt’s critically acclaimed book “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”. Fame from the book brought a boom to the city’s tourism industry and its offspring has resulted in thousands of visitors coming just to view the sites Berendt so vividly describes. A number of tour companies offer “book” tours. The more elaborate, annual “Holiday Tour of Homes”, sponsored by the Downtown Neighborhood Association, features 25 of the area’s most beautiful, antebellum and Victorian era homes. Visitors can track battles from the War of 1812 and the Civil War at Old Fort Jackson, Fort Screven and Fort Pulaski; go back in time and visit 18th- and 19th-century architectural excellence at the King-Tisdell Cottage, Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace, Andrew Low House, Davenport House and Owens-Thomas House; discover Savannah’s many museums to learn about the contributions of Africans to the American tapestry at the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum; or visit one the South's oldest art museums, the Telfair Museum of Art. The Mighty Eighth Air Force Heritage Museum honors some 350,000 men and women who served during WWII. The Mighty Eighth Air Force, originally formed in Savannah in 1942, became the largest air armada in the history of aviation. With its historic squares, azalea laden parks, 18th-century cemeteries and riverfront boardwalks, Savannah is a great “walking” city. One of the best way to get its feel is to walk the Historic District, exploring Historic River Street, a nine-block plaza facing the Savannah River that offers shops, restaurants, galleries and pubs. There you can relax while enjoying a harbor cruise, explore City Market and City Market Arts Center where there are working artists, stroll the Bull Street corridor, taking in the galleries, museums and beautiful squares, visit some of the elegant historic inns, all uniquely different or sit back and enjoy a leisurely horse-and-carriage tour (perhaps an evening tour featuring Savannah’s ghosts). Broughton Street, Savannah’s once-bustling retail center, has been transformed as building facades are restored to their original state, and filled with antique shops, boutiques, international restaurants, and loft apartments. Several new hotels have opened and a mini theater district emerged with the restoration of three theaters. Savannah is part of the 112 miles of Georgia’s Colonial Coast where white sand and blue sky are complemented by an easy-paced round of golf, wild horses on a tranquil beach, colorful shrimp boats in a golden marsh, explorations through black swamp waters, or exquisite sampling of of low-country cooking. Along the entire Georgian coast, from historic Savannah to picturesque St. Mary’s, an exciting range of history waits to be explored. Just a 15-mile drive from historic downtown Savannah, Tybee Island is the perfect place to collect seashells by the Atlantic surf, cast fishing lines near the new Tybee Pier and Pavilion, charter a deep-sea fishing expedition, or view the breathtaking low country from the Tybee Island Museum and Lighthouse, one of the oldest lighthouses on the eastern seaboard.
