USA - CALIFORNIA - LOS ANGELES : DOWNTOWN LA ITS URBAN HEART

In a city that spans 467 square miles, getting out to explore all there is to see and do in Los Angeles might seem overwhelming – there's Downtown LA, the San Fernando Valley and coastal communities, not to mention smaller cities such as Beverly Hills and Pasadena that reside within, or adjacent to, LA's boundaries and are considered part of the LA area.

At its urban heart is Downtown LA with its skyscrapers, upscale hotels, subway and light rail hubs and cultural attractions.

Los Angeles has an incredible array of museums and Downtown LA is home to many significant cultural and historical buildings. Within walking distance or short ride of each other are the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Japanese-American Museum, the Los Angeles Central Public Library, the Grand Central Market, the Broadway historic district, El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument (Olvera Street) and more. One of the largest public art collections in the US, the Getty Center in Brentwood, is a post-modern castle set on a hilltop overlooking the city.

Just east of the skyscrapers are the old Financial District's historic buildings. Today, they are part of the Garment, Toy and Jewelry Districts, as well as the LA Flower Mart. And some of the grand movie palaces in the old Theater District have been restored.

LA has more live theater than any city including New York with more than 1,500 theatrical productions annually and more professional actors than anywhere else in the world. LA is the film festival capital of the world, with 49 annual festivals.

For a taste of other cultures, Little Tokyo, Olvera Street (Mexican), Chinatown and Koreatown are nearby, offering museums and authentic shops and restaurants from some of LA's many immigrant populations.

Like a glamorous starlet, Hollywood has made a comeback. It has evolved from a historic, funky area into one of LA's hippest spots to shop, dine and be entertained. The Hollywood & Highland entertainment complex, with shops, restaurants, movie theaters (including Grauman's Chinese Theatre), the Kodak Theatre (home of the Academy Awards) and The Highlands (one of LA's hottest nightspots) have helped raise Hollywood's glamour to new heights.

Museums such as the Hollywood Entertainment Museum and the Hollywood Museum in the old, art deco Max Factor building chronicle the entertainment industry from its beginnings. And offbeat museums – the Hollywood Wax Museum, Ripley's Believe it or Not! Hollywood and the Erotic Museum among them – offer a different perspective.

Los Angeles' national and California state parks are important parts of the travel canvas, adding rich experiences to any LA trip. The Santa Monica National Recreation Area takes up much of the Santa Monica Mountains and provides magnificent recreational possibilities for visitors year-round, from mountain hikes to beaches to water skiing to exploring historic buildings to bird watching, and fishing. In the winter there is skiing ... with time enough to tee off on a range of courses.

LA offers more than two dozen beaches, plus marinas, pleasure piers and other diversions in its coastal communities. Connecting most of them is the Coastal Bike Path, which stretches 22 miles from Pacific Palisades to Redondo Beach.

Los Angeles County has more hotel rooms, 107,500, than all but two other metropolitan areas in the United States (Las Vegas and Orlando). Downtown LA has Los Angeles' largest hotel, the Westin Bonaventure Hotel and Suites, and two other hotels in the Top 10: the Wilshire Grand, fifth overall, and the Millennium Biltmore, 10th overall.
