USA - LOS ANGELES : FINAL HOMES OF LA'S CELEBRITY RESIDENTS
by Tuppence Keith

Celebrities not only live in LA, they die in LA. And are buried in LA.

Cemeteries all over the Los Angeles region are the final resting places of Hollywood stars dating back to silent films. Visitors can pay their respects to Marilyn Monroe, Rudolph Valentino, Bob Hope and dozens of others.

Most cemeteries with celebrity gravesites are helpful and offer maps and/or staffers to answer specific questions ("Where's Marilyn Monroe?"). The exception is the two Forest Lawn Memorial Parks, which provide maps but have forbidden staffers to answer celebrity questions.

Marilyn Monroe, wearing a green Pucci dress and platinum wig, is buried in a simple wall crypt, number 24, on the Corridor of Memories at Westwood Memorial Park. Fan clubs have donated the memorial bench nearby.

The Bob Hope Memorial Garden is at Mission San Fernando in the San Fernando Valley. The English-style (Hope was born in England) flower garden, adjacent to the Mission Chapel is designed to be a quiet spot of contemplation. It features religious statuary, meditation benches and two towering 150-year-old Aleppo pines.

Many other celebrities are buried at this historic cemetery including Ritchie Valens (who grew up nearby), William Frawley (Fred Mertz on "I Love Lucy"), and several character actors including Walter Brennan and William Bendix.

Fans (and perhaps great-granddaughters of fans) of Rudolph Valentino make a pilgrimage to Hollywood Forever every year on the anniversary of his death, August 23. For years, a mysterious woman appeared, clad all in black and her face hidden by a black veil, and left roses. The early Ladies in Black were thought to be grieving lovers of the silent screen star, but later Ladies in Black seem to have no direct connection. Some years, even a drag queen in white shows up at Valentino's crypt.

Cecil B. DeMille, Tyrone Power, Jayne Mansfield, Douglas Fairbanks (Jr. and Sr.) are also buried here. Dating from 1899, the cemetery has many old-fashioned tombs, mausoleums and headstones on its sprawling grounds, as well as a picturesque lake. Video life stories on screens are embedded in some stones – just in case you're a little fuzzy on Cecil B. DeMille.

Gregory Peck is buried at the new Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. The Cathedral's below-ground crypt mausoleum also contains the remains of several church cardinals and archbishops.

Legendary horror film actor Bela Lugosi is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery. Bing Crosby is also buried here.

Al Jolson's huge mausoleum, all white marble and colonnaded, is in the Hillside Memorial Park. It is so large (many say, to match his ego) that it can be seen from the 405 freeway. Jack Benny and Milton Berle are buried here as well.

Many cemeteries are worth visiting for their sense of history.

Mission Cemetery, adjacent to Mission San Fernando in Mission Hills, has graves going back to the 18th century. Mission San Gabriel has two cemeteries that visitors may stroll through. The original mission cemetery contains the remains of more than 6,000 Indians who were stricken by cholera and smallpox in 1825. A second cemetery was established for Claretian priests in the early 1900s (the Claretian Fathers took charge after the mission was returned to the Church).

Evergreen Cemetery in East LA is the oldest in the City of LA.

Opened in 1877 it contains ornate headstones from the mid- and late-19th century. A memorial to Issei pioneers and a Chinese Burial Shrine are also here.

Angelus Rosedale opened in 1884 as the first cemetery in LA to accept all races and religions. The grounds contain several pyramid-shaped crypts and have been used for many movie shoots. Several LA mayors are buried here, as well as Hattie McDaniel and Maria Rasputin.

Hollywood Forever offers bimonthly walking tours through the cemetery. A knowledgeable guide knows where all the stars are buried.

The cemetery also hosts a large Day of the Dead celebration where visitors bring flowers and candles to the cemetery to create elaborate altars honoring the dead. The event includes traditional Mexican music, folk dancing, theatrical performances, foods and crafts.
