USA - ARKANSAS - LITTLE ROCK: HOME TO THE CLINTON LEGACY![]() The history of Little Rock is rich, spanning from pioneer days in the 19th century to presidential elections in the close of the 20th century and with everything from the Civil War to the civil rights movement in between. Little Rock is bursting with new energy but it also clings tight to its rich and colorful Southern history. An entire block of Little Rock pioneers' early rustic structures has been preserved and set aside as a museum since the early 1940s. The Greek Revival-style Old State House retains a place of prominence on downtown's major thoroughfare across the street from a modern skyscraper.
The Clinton Presidential Center and Park anchor the historic River Market District downtown. Formerly a nearly abandoned warehouse district, this area of downtown Little Rock is now filled with restaurants shops, art galleries, museums, library, bars and seasonal farmers market. The River Market District is bordered by Riverfront Park and the Arkansas River to the north. The park stretches 11 blocks and provides large areas for outdoor events, leisure activities and a glimpse of the state’s history. Riverfront Park is home to many exciting concerts at the Riverfest Amphitheatre Historic Arkansas Museum, Old State House, Arkansas Arts Center, Decorative Arts Museum, Museum of Discovery, Aerospace Education Center/IMAX Theatre, Central High School National Historic Site and Museum Visitors Center, and Little Rock Zoo are important visitor attractions. Set in the oldest surviving state capitol west of the Mississippi River, the Old State House Museum has been designated a National Historic Landmark, though it is probably best known throughout the country as the scene of President Clinton's 1992 and 1996 election night celebrations. This magnificent Greek Revival structure houses a multimedia museum of Arkansas history, with a special emphasis on women's history, political history, and historical programming for school children. The Little Rock museum also boasts nationally recognized collections of Civil War battle flags, the inaugural gowns of governors' wives, Arkansas art pottery, and African-American quilts. Across the river, North Little Rock offers Burn's Park, one of the USA's larger municipal parks; Wild River Country, a water theme park; and the Old Mill, which appeared in the opening sequences of "Gone With the Wind." Downtown areas of Little Rock and North Little Rock are linked by replicas of vintage trolleys. Wildwood Park for the Performing Arts is located on 105 acres of virgin-forested land in west Little Rock. This acclaimed performing arts park grew out of the Arkansas Opera Theatre and now serves as home for the company. Seven spectacular gardens and an eight-acre lake provide a beautiful background for outdoor musical performances. Near Little Rock, Pinnacle Mountain State Park, a day-use park dedicated to environmental education, recreation and preservation, is easily identified by its namesake, 1,011-foot conical shaped peak. Sweeping vistas of the Arkansas River Valley can be seen from its peak for those hardy enough to make it to the top. Photo: courtesy Little Rock CVB
