USA - ARIZONA : THE LURE OF THE GRAND CANYON![]() Look down on its myriad colors and dramatic rock formations and you see back to the beginning of time. Two billion years in the making, the Grand Canyon, one of nature’s most stunning creations, has slashed its imprint in the fabric of northern Arizona. Stand on the Grand Canyon’s South Rim, Arizona’s most visited attraction, and be awed by nature’s exquisite architecture.
But the wonder doesn’t end with the Grand Canyon. From the South Rim of the canyon, the largest stand of ponderosa pine in the world sweeps towards Arizona's highest mountains, the majestic San Francisco peaks, home of the Gods in both the Navajo and Hopi religions. Farther south, Canyon Country plummets down into Oak Creek Canyon and Sedona’s Red Rock Country of movie legend. Canyon Country’s altitude sweeps from 3,000 to 12,000 feet, so the area enjoys cool summer temperatures. Its four season climate offers a diverse choice of outdoor recreation from hiking, golf and mountain biking to downhill and cross-country skiing. A good place from which to explore the area is Williams, a mountain village at the foot of Bill Williams Mountain (9,264 ft ) surrounded by the pine-covered Kaibab National Forest where you can hike, fish and watch the diverse wildlife. The Best Western Inn of Williams is nestled in a beautiful pine tree setting on the edge of the Kaibab National Forest, just minutes from the Williams historic district and the Grand Canyon Railway Depot. It is only one hour from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, scenic Sedona, Oak Creek Canyon, ancient Southwestern Indian ruins, and prehistoric cliff dwellings. A forest golf course is only two miles from the Inn of Williams, and a great family ski area is located nearby. You may want to hang around for the many festivals and rodeos staged in Williams, and make enough time to check out the historic downtown’s quaint and diverse shops. It offers the authentic feel of Route 66, since Williams was the last Arizona town bypassed by Interstate 40. Several local stores and bars provide a cast of colorful stories and characters. which is appropriate, since Williams was named for the mountain man Bill Williams. From Williams you can board the Grand Canyon Railway for a same-day return journey to the Grand Canyon. The two-hour or so train ride is not simply a means of getting there it’s a fun-filled reenactment of the riproarin’ Old West. The Grand Canyon Railway carries passengers from Williams in authentically restored 1923 Harriman coaches across 65 miles of Ponderosa pine, small canyons and grassy plains to the historic 1910 log depot on the South Rim, just steps from the Grand Canyon.
On the journey, strolling Western singers entertain the passengers who revel in an hilarious train robbery, with outlaws prowling the aisles looking for ornery faces. On-board Marshall John B. Goodmore (“The B is for ‘Be good or be gone’”) finally brings the outlaws to heel. You’ll have more than three hours to explore the Grand Canyon. Passengers may take fully narrated motorcoach tours from the train station to enjoy the many spectacular views from the South Rim overlooks. If you are driving to the Grand Canyon stop at the National Geographic Visitor Centre in Tusayan, just outside Grand Canyon National Park to watch "The Hidden Secrets" at the Grand Canyon IMAX Theater. It is the most watched IMAX film in history, with hourly showings 365 days a year. Photo: courtesy Arizona Office of Tourism
