EUROPE - SCOTLAND - OBAN : Oban Caledonian Hotel - Luxury on the Waterside
by Ursula & Eldrid Retief

Oban on the west coast of Scotland is known as the “Gateway to the Isles” and its landmark building is the majestic Oban Caledonian Hotel.

Originally built around 1882, The Caledonian Hotel is located on the waterside overlooking the harbour in the centre of Oban, amid truly spectacular Scottish surroundings. Oban is one of Scotland's most visited vacation destinations.

The Oban Caledonian Hotel is an ideal base for exploring the Highlands of Scotland, with the isles and islands of West Scotland within a short ferry ride, including the isles of Mull and Iona. On Mull, the town of Tobermory with its famous coloured houses is the setting for the popular BBC TV series "Ballamory".

Each of the Caledonian's 59 well-appointed en-suite bedrooms has a nautical theme, with most providing stunning views overlooking Oban Bay to the mountains of Mull and Ardgour. The hotel is close to the ferry port and the railway station.

Dining is available in the Top Deck restaurant, which provides an intimate candlelit dining experience serving freshly prepared, locally-sourced cuisine. For a more relaxed setting the hotel's bar serves a great selection of light snacks and meals throughout the day.

The Oban Caledonian also has excellent facilities for conference and wedding requirements, with function suites catering from small intimate meetings to larger banquets of up to 130 people.

Unlimited complimentary internet access is also available at the hotel.

Activities include hill walking, dolphin watching and mountain biking, while there is also a seal sanctuary nearby. The town also boasts one of Scotland's oldest whisky distilleries, the Oban Distillery.
