CANADA - SASKATCHEWAN : FOLLOW YOUR HEART
by Becky Poley-Schutz

Saskatchewan is a place that will settle your soul and allow your spirit to take flight. The landscape is larger than life, the people are down-to-earth, and the cultural experiences are authentic. There's room to breathe in the province's cities and towns – and in the vast outdoors.

In Regina (REGINA HOTELS), the Mounties take centre stage with the opening of the new RCMP Heritage Centre, located on the historic grounds of the RCMP Academy, Depot Division in Regina. Designed by world-renowned Canadian architect Arthur Erickson, the 70,000 square foot RCMP Heritage Centre is a significant heritage project. The Heritage Centre, working closely with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, will share the RCMP story with the world.

The Centre is modern, interactive and experiential and makes extensive use of a variety of technologies and interactive exhibits to tell the RCMP story, including the critical role the Force plays in addressing contemporary issues. While at the RCMP grounds, visitors are also welcome to enjoy the regularly scheduled Sergeant Major's Parade or the seasonal Sunset Retreat Ceremonies, which occur Tuesday evening from July to August.

Keep the whole family entertained with trips to local museums, historic sites and attractions such as Wanuskewin Heritage Park at Saskatoon, Batoche National Historic Site near Duck Lake, or the T.rex Discovery Centre in Eastend just to name a few.

Saskatchewan has more than 2 million hectares (5 million acres) of parkland, including two national parks, 34 provincial parks and 101 regional parks, which make Saskatchewan the perfect place for a family-friendly, nature-based vacation. Many of the parks feature beautiful lakes, great for swimming, boating, fishing and sailing. Opportunities for golfing, hiking, horseback riding are abundant.

Some 100,000 lakes attract anglers from around the world. They come not only for the trophy fishing but also to relax in comfortable lodges tucked away in remote and pristine wilderness. To canoeists and kayakers, northern Saskatchewan ranks as one of the all-time great adventure destinations.

Saskatchewan's wide open spaces make the province a paradise for animal lovers. Birdwatchers can see endangered species, such as the piping plover, sage grouse, burrowing owl and whooping crane. And Grasslands National Park of Canada is the only place in Canada where colonies of black-tailed prairie dogs are still found in their natural habitat.

Saskatchewan's cultural roots are as varied as the landscape. Aboriginal peoples share their heritage at powwows, heritage sites and tipi encampments. Métis culture comes alive at annual festivals and echoes across the fields of Batoche. Immigrants from Europe, Asia, India and elsewhere all have stories to tell – and the telling takes place in museums, craft shops, ethnic restaurants and annual celebrations and events.
