Travel Information for South Dakota Hotel Guests

If you are searching for an inn, hotel, motel or resort near a South Dakota attraction, amusement and theme parks, or close to shopping, cultural events, historic sites, museums and performing arts centers, or nearby zoos, a festival, a golf course, a South Dakota state park, this is where you will find it.

From the rolling prairies and glittering lakes to the Badlands and the legendary Black Hills, SOUTH DAKOTA is a haven for fisherman, hunters, golfers and skiers alike. It has more than 1,100 square miles of water and a fishing season that never closes; hunters have access to nearly 5 million acres of public land.

ABERDEEN visitors can follow the yellow brick road to Storybook Land, a magical theme park for their favorite storybook and fairy tale characters come to life; for a look into the past, there’s the Dacotah Prairie Museum.

BLACK HILLS and BADLANDS are the legendary Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming, an oasis of pine-clad mountains on the Great Plains, home of Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial. It’s a place where bison and wild horses still roam free. It is the home of Badlands National Park and the Great Sioux Nation.

The State Agricultural Heritage Museum in BROOKINGS is dedicated to preserving the state’s rich agricultural history and rural heritage; the Brookings Arts Council is located in the Community Cultural Center; visitors are welcome at South Dakota State University's McCrory Gardens.

CHAMBERLAIN/OACOMA is where the explorers Lewis and Clark hunted and fished; the Akta Lakota Museum at St. Joseph's Indian School ("Akta Lakota" means "to honor the people") is an educational outreach of the school that strives to preserve and promote Sioux culture.

The CRAZY HORSE MEMORIAL is in the Black Hills of western South Dakota; the collection at the Indian Museum of North America speaks eloquently to present and future generations about the daily life of the American Indian.

CUSTER is only minutes away from Mount Rushmore and the carving of Crazy Horse. Nearby is the Black Hills National Forest, Wind Cave National Park and Jewel Cave National Monument, the third longest cave in the world, and Custer State Park. The Heritage Village and Four Mile Old West Town are “Old West” towns. The National Museum of Wood Carving has a large collection of carvings by a Disneyland animator.

DEADWOOD CITY visitors experience the history of the early days of Deadwood Gulch at the Ghosts of Deadwood Gulch Wax Museum, during guided tours of old town Deadwood and of the notorious Chinese tunnels beneath the city of Deadwood; the Adams Museum and House Museum has memorabilia from early settlers.

Near Lead, DEER MOUNTAIN is South Dakota’s largest ski area. De Smet is the home of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society which preserves and restores the Ingalls-Wilder sites and the hosting of Laura’s “Little Town on the Prairie” readers.

Each of the four GREAT LAKES OF SOUTH DAKOTA offers consistently good fishing, hunting, water fun, family recreation, and other activities.

HILLS CITY visitors can see the Black Hills on an 1880 Train/Black Hills Central Railroad steam engine.

The Mammoth Site at HOT SPRINGS has one of the world's greatest fossil treasures; Wind Cave National Park is one of the world's longest and most complex caves.

KEYSTONE, "The Home of Mt. Rushmore", is only two miles from Mt. Rushmore where the Visitor Center/Museum has 21 interpretive exhibits; Rushmore Cave is one of nature’s fascinating spectacles.

The Prairie Village, MADISON, is an historic town with nearly 40 restored and furnished buildings with agricultural heritage displays.

New murals are created every year for the World’s Only Corn Palace at MITCHELL, each requiring thousands of bushels of corn; an English-style castle is home to the Enchanted World Doll Museum which has over 4,000 dolls; other attractions include the Middle Border Museum of American Indian & Pioneer Life, the arts of the Northern Plains at the Oscar Howe Art Center, and Prehistoric Indian Village, Museum & Archeodome.

MURDO, the Pioneer Auto Show & Antique Town, has over 250 collectible cars, motor cycles, tractors, music boxes, bygone toys, and nostalgic items.

Whether visitors are into water sports on the Missouri River, engineering feats like the Oahe Dam or following the trail of Lewis and Clark, they'll find it all in PIERRE, South Dakota's Capital City. Other attractions include the Museum of the Cultural Heritage Center/State Historical Society, the South Dakota Discovery Center & Aquarium, the South Dakota National Guard Museum which preserves South Dakota’s military heritage, and Flyway Goose Camp which holds more than 250,000 waterfowl at the peak of the migration.

RAPID CITY attractions include the wildlife at Bear Country USA, tours and gemstone panning at Black Hills Caverns, Journey Museum, the Museum of Geology, the Sitting Bull Crystal Caverns, Reptile Gardens, and Rushmore Waterslide Park.

SIOUX FALLS is the gateway to the Plains and home to the Washington Pavilion of Arts and Science, Siouxland Heritage Museums and the rarest of muscle cars at the Performance Car Museum. There’s a lot for children to do at the Outdoor Campus, the Great Plains Zoo & Delbridge Museum, and at Wild Water West Waterpark/Family Amusement Park.

For 60 years visitors have come to SPEARFISH to experience the Black Hills Passion Play; the High Plains Heritage Center Museum is a five-state regional museum which honors the Old West pioneers and Native Americans.

The “Sacred Mountain”, Bear Butte State Park at STURGIS, is the origin of many Native American legends; the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame is here.

The Shrine to Music Museum in VERMILLION is a treasure trove of rare, antique musical instruments while the W. H. Over State Museum preserves and interprets the heritage of South Dakota.

Uptown WATERTOWN features more than 65 buildings on the National Historic Register; the Kampeska Heritage Museum focuses on the history of Watertown and the surrounding area and the Redlin Art Center is the permanent home for Terry Redlin's original naturalistic art work.
