CHAMBERLAIN/OACOMA is where the explorers Lewis and Clark hunted and fished; the Akta Lakota Museum at St. Joseph's Indian School ("Akta Lakota" means "to honor the people") is an educational outreach of the school that strives to preserve and promote Sioux culture.
The CRAZY HORSE MEMORIAL is in the Black Hills of western South Dakota; the collection at the Indian Museum of North America speaks eloquently to present and future generations about the daily life of the American Indian.
CUSTER is only minutes away from Mount Rushmore and the carving of Crazy Horse. Nearby is the Black Hills National Forest, Wind Cave National Park and Jewel Cave National Monument, the third longest cave in the world, and Custer State Park. The Heritage Village and Four Mile Old West Town are “Old West” towns. The National Museum of Wood Carving has a large collection of carvings by a Disneyland animator.
DEADWOOD CITY visitors experience the history of the early days of Deadwood Gulch at the Ghosts of Deadwood Gulch Wax Museum, during guided tours of old town Deadwood and of the notorious Chinese tunnels beneath the city of Deadwood; the Adams Museum and House Museum has memorabilia from early settlers.
Near Lead, DEER MOUNTAIN is South Dakota’s largest ski area. De Smet is the home of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society which preserves and restores the Ingalls-Wilder sites and the hosting of Laura’s “Little Town on the Prairie” readers.
Each of the four GREAT LAKES OF SOUTH DAKOTA offers consistently good fishing, hunting, water fun, family recreation, and other activities.
HILLS CITY visitors can see the Black Hills on an 1880 Train/Black Hills Central Railroad steam engine.
The Mammoth Site at HOT SPRINGS has one of the world's greatest fossil treasures; Wind Cave National Park is one of the world's longest and most complex caves.
