FORT TOTTEN State Historic Site, which dates from the era of Indian wars in the 1860s is an "outdoor museum" of 17 original historic buildings; Sully's Hill National Game Preserve is one of four refuges managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for American bison and elk.

The Sitting Bull Burial State Historic Site at FORT YATES marks the original grave of the Hunkpapa Sioux leader. The Heritage Village in GRAND FORKS preserves the history of the northern Red River Valley with weekend tours of pioneer buildings.
