An hour from Boise is the Bruneau Dunes State Park which includes the largest single-structured sand dune in North America and the Bruneau Dunes Observatory.

Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge is a sanctuary for migratory birds at BONNERS FERRY. City of Rocks National Reserve is located amidst the mountain peaks of the Albion Mountain Range; many people see animals, faces, or buildings in the 2.5-billion years old granitic rock formations; the Visitor Center is located in ALMO. Nestled among tall pines on the shores of the lake is COEUR D'ALENE; attractions include Silverwood Theme Park and the nearby Cataldo Mission of the Sacred Heart which was built entirely without nails in 1853.
